My cousin and I had our LO's 10 days apart. She just got a new convertible carseat for her LOs (she had twins). The carseat I bought goes up to 35 lbs and/or until LO is too tall for it. At this point my LO could literally use it for years. He's only in the 7% for height and weight.
Am I the only person not getting a new carseat now? Are any of you getting a new carseat sooner than later? Why was I told to get one that can hold LO for up to 35 lbs if people don't use them for that long?
Am I missing something here?
TIA!
Re: Am I missing something?
DS is in his convertible already, but that's because he didn't like being reclined so far in the infant seat and I was tired of lugging it around. If he didn't mind the recline we would have just left the seat in the car and carried just him, but being able to sit more upright and look around has made him much happier in the car.
I personally never would have spent extra on an infant carseat that goes up to 35 pounds, though, as DD still isn't there and she will be 4 at the end of the month. Obviously she would have outgrown the length long before the weight and she is a shorty.
we got a new one way before approaching the weight limit because she was over the recline and starting to fuss a lot in her seats. Also, we split dropoff/pickup and were sick of carrying that seat inside and leaving it every day.
We figured we have to buy convertibles some time, we'd be buying two seats and they'll last the same amount of time whether we buy them now or wait until she really needs it, but what's the point?
I just got a convertible in last week and my LO is 8 months.
It wasn't that I NEEDED to trade. She was nowhere near the height or weight limit on her carrier.
However, I'm a strong girl and it just got too heavy to carry around. She also sits up so well in highchairs and carts now, that it's way easier just to carry her in and save the cart space.
Also, my LO loves to look around esp. in the car and a in convertible she seems to be able to see better. She doesn't lay as flat either, which makes her happy.
Lastly, leaving her original carrier in the car got to be hard because I had to bend so far down/deep to strap her in. She'd scream, my back hurt. This way I can stand like a normal person.
DS is 20 pounds and 28 inches long, he was too tall for our seat and I was squeezing him in. He is so much happier in the convertible and my back is thanking me.
My pedi's daughter is a teeny thing at 13 months, she's still in her infant seat!
Our LO is getting close to the height limit, and target was having an unbeatable sale, so I went ahead and bit the bullet. Although I liked being able to take LO in and out of the car without unbuckling him when he was little, I do feel like the infant seat was a bit of a waste of money.
But again, we live in a cold climate, so I don't know if I completely regret it.
It's 35 lbs and I think 30 inches. Our LO is maybe 16 lbs and around 22-23". He's a little guy.

I don't know who told you to get a car seat that holds a baby up to 35 lbs; everyone I spoke to said that their babies outgrew the height limit far before the weight limit! DD is 20 pounds now at 9 months, but she outgrew our Graco 30 almost 3 months ago. It wasn't the height or weight limit really; she just looked so squished and uncomfortable in it. So we bought a new one at 6 months.
So it's just a matter of different babies!
But I don't think there are really any babies who could realistically use an infant car seat up to 35 pounds. I think it's just a marketing trick.
Mine probably will.
