When do all of you plan on taking LO to the dentist for the first time?

Re: Dentist

  • After she's able to follow instructions on the spot well enough to open her mouth on command.  We'll work on 'say aaaah' before we get there, obviously, but at this point the dentist would just get bitten, she would squirm around, try and touch stuff, etc.  It would be a waste.

This exactly.  They don't actually clean the teeth until 2 anyways so we'll wait until then.  The dentist would be a disaster right now.

  • Aiden has ameliogenesis imperfecta. Basically he's missing the enamel on his top front four teeth in areas, as well as having very thin weak enamel on the rest of his teeth. He'll most likely need crowns on any affected adult teeth. We started taking him at a year and wish I would have taken him sooner. They take pictures of his teeth to monitor the loss of enamel, and just do a general look over.

Emily isn't showing any signs of it but we'll take her this month. The visits are free with our insurance and he actually had a lot of helpful advice on making it easier to brush their teeth, etc. Plus free tooth brushes :)

  • Our pedi suggested around 18 months.  I guess we only have 2 pediatric dentists in our area and they book up way in advance.  He said it helps to get in their system now in case of a dental emergency in the future.  I think all they will do is look in his mouth and say everything is fine, but it's free with our insurance.

  • We have already been. We went right after Oliver turn 13 months. Our Dr. suggest that they get flouride put on their teeth 3 times before they reach a yr old as well. So they have been checking his teeth at every appt. He is not one for letting us brush his teeth, it is a fight. When we took him he actually did good. The dentist are obviously trained to handle every situation, including toddlers that bite. They checked his teeth which took about 5 seconds and applied the flouride to all his teeth. He has 8 right now. I have an appt scheduled to take him back in June for them to apply more flouride. I think that it is never to soon to start to teach and show them the importance of oral hygene, so I am very happy with the fact that we already started the process. Every Dr. and clinic are different though. Most do not recommend until 2 yrs. I think with them being difficult and a wiggle worm is just the life with a toddler. I am hoping that starting to take him sooner, will help ease his fear as a child that most develop of dentist. Plus the dentist was able to answer so many questions I had and he showed me the best way to keep him still to brush his teeth, thank goodness for that because now I am actually able to comfortably brush his teeth twice a day.
