2nd Trimester

cyst on brain :(

So during my 18 week ultrasound they found a a cyst on her brain :( her left side. Has this happened to anyone else? They told me not to worry that it normally goes away 99 percent of the time, however this does not make me feel better in the slightest.

Re: cyst on brain :(

  • My niece had a couple cysts on her brain around 20 weeks.  They went away by birth.

    Good luck!

Dont stress it... Seriously. My little guy had them too. At least every 1 in 4 baby (if not more) have them and they completely disappear on their own.

  • Focus on the fact that there's a tiny 1% chance that this is really any issue at all.  Easier to say than do, I know, but life (and your pregnancy!) is too short to waste away worrying about miniscule chances like that.

    ETA: fixed wording.  Doh.

  • We had one of these show up on our 19wk ultrasound. We had a level 2 ultrasound a week later so they could get better pictures. They found no other soft markers during the level 2 ultrasound and because my NT testing bloodwork numbers were really good, our doctor is not worried at all. The perinatalogist we saw for the level 2 ultrasound said these are becoming more common since more people are having more ultrasounds these days. She said they usually are not indicative of any problems/conditions, unless your have more soft makers beyond just the CPC. I know its hard, but try not to worry. More than likely it will be gone before baby is born, some are even gone by the 30/32 wk ultrasound.

  • Cyst on the brain or a choroid plexus cyst in the ventricle?  Choroid plexus cycts are in the choroid that makes the spinal fluid, not in the brain tissue itself.  Choroid plexus cysts always go away eventually, generally before 28 weeks, and have no impact on brain structure of function at all.  It is a soft marker for aneuploidy, but one soft marker alone isnt cause for concern, esp if you had normal testing.

  • Four of my brother's children had this in utero and it was gone before birth. Try not to worry too much, way easier said than done I know. 99% of the time they vanish, those are great numbers!

  • Yes, my baby has one, found at exactly 18 weeks. The idiot doctor sat there for 25 minutes basically telling me that my baby probably had Down's and booked an appointment for me with a specialist the next business day "because it's worrying". Turned out my baby is absolutely fine and perfectly healthy, and the cyst is completely normal.

If they told you not to worry, I imagine it's a choroid plexus cyst. As a PP said, that's nothing to worry about. The specialist told me that any gland anywhere in the body can get a cyst around it, because it produces fluid, and it's normal. If it makes you feel any better, he even said: "if we had to do an MRI on a baby for any reason and spotted one of these cysts, we wouldn't even mention it. That's how not-serious it is" (I can't for the life of me remember the word for 'not-serious', but you get the idea).

I know this is pretty much impossible, but try not to worry!

  • They found two on my baby at 17wks 1 day. It was the only soft marker my little one had. Of course the Dr's in my area said an amnio is the only way to know for sure (which I hated hearign and i've since decided not to do). From the research I've done, these are very common and usually mean nothing unless other things are present. of course there is always that 1 person that it could happen to, but from the research I've done, has shown me that in most cases, the baby is born perfectly healthy.

Thank God for the bump -- you girls have been SO helpful!!

I feel for you because I dealt with a douche of a Dr. after my a/s.  He gave us all the facts which weren't too alarming but still worrisome.  Of course my husband started to get a little upset and asked the Dr. for his personal opinion if we should worry and he responded with something like - well i am the type that would worry until I got an amnio.  I get it, it was his opinion.  But as a Dr. to expectant parents, I think they need to be a little more compasionate & caring.  I don't need him to sugar coat things, but it would have been nice for him to hold back his "the only way to know for sure" routine and give us the true chances of something actually being wrong.  I left feeling like *** and I don't think it had to end that way.  GL to you!!!  Let's keep in touch!!

That sounds awesome! Sending a pm your way :)

I really think that The Bump needs a kind of 'sticky' thread for people who've been told that their baby has a cyst. In the past week alone, this is the third post I've seen from ladies who are (understandably) worried, including my own. Anyone else think it would be helpful if we could all have a place we could go to 1) get information from other Bumpies, 2) rant to someone who has experienced this, 3) reassure each other? Not a separate board, just a permanent thread, which would always show up on the top of the 2nd trimester board...

  • Thank you everyone for the posts they did make me feel better. Also today I went in for a ultrasound with a specialist and he said its nothing to worry about as long as other things in her ultrasound were normal like her upper lip being normal and her legs being normal even looking to see if she opens and closes her fist. Apparently 99 percent go away the other 1 percent have what could be a fatal condition. She didnt want to sit still but everything came back normal he said not to worry that he could do the bloodwork on me to see if she has a likely hood of having some type of downs. I declined. I feel like it there is something wrong with her its not going to change the way I love her so why know. He thinks shes completely fine tho :) yay great news.
