Lunch meat and pg

Why can't we have it again?  That is sometimes all I can manage to eat, everything else sounds disgusting.  I have had his probably half a dozen times...eek!

As pp said, listeria. Risk is VERY low, but pregnant women are at higher risk and the consequences are worse when you're pregnant. That being said, MOST pregnant women I know eat lunchmeat because the risk is so low and many doctors don't even think it's an issue. Personally, I cut out any potential risk, no matter how small, as long as it doesn't have a significant negative impact on my ability to live my life day to day (so the "you're way more likely to get hit by a car walking across the street" argument doesn't fly with me because it's a lot harder to avoid that).

Bottom line - if you've already had it without incident, no need to worry about previous consumption. Up to you if you want to continue to have it or not. It's not a moderation thing either, you don't build up listeria as you eat more, one given piece of lunchmeat could have it (but again, risk is WAY low). I think this board is more conservative than the norm on stuff like this (self included).

Or, you can heat it to steaming which would kill any bacteria. But that just didn't sound appetizing to me.

Just heat it to steaming hot and you are fine.  I eat it at least 4-5 times a week.

I ate lunch meat during pregnancy #1 and during pregnancy #2.  My OB is more worried about the high sodium content of lunch meat than the risk of me getting listeria. 

I am quite liberal about dietary restrictions though and think many of them are ridiculous.  Why should one stay away from a soft cheese if it is pasteurinzed??

You might want to talk to your OB about it.

Thanks, I have my first appt Fri so I will definitely ask then.  But for now.....no more lunch meat!!!

This was me too.  I'm a np in an ob/gyn office (I went there for my care also).  1 dr in the practice recommends against, the rest don't even mention it as a risk.  I ate lunch regularly w/ the dr that I saw, and that lunch regularly included lunch meat, he wasn't concerned.

There was recently an outbreak from cantaloupe so it's in other things too.

I just microwaved it and then had panini style warm sandwiches with lunch meat, just to be safe.   The risk is low but it made me feel better.
