Late Term and Child Loss

Meeting with the MFM

We finally were able to get an appointment with the MFM to find out what we might do differently next time.  We lost our baby because of severe Pre-E, HELLP and severe IUGR.  I am thinking a lot of you might have had an appointment like this- anything you would suggest asking?  I am a little nervous that I will forget something important.

Re: Meeting with the MFM

  • My suggestion...write your questions down. Go to the appointment with pen and paper. Sounds crazy...bit it's not. There is so mich that ran through my mind and even after I was still asking DH exactly what she said. The questions I wrote down helped alot. Major questions -- how can you prevent previous conditions? What treatment/game plans can they offer? How often will you be seen/monitored? And most importantly, do they take your concerns, care, and potetial fears/anxiety seriously? After meetig with 2 MFM's and the first beig a complete a$$, the last question/comfortability was most important to me. Good luck!

  • There are a few common things that are often done for preeclampsia you could ask about if they don't bring it up: I am taking low dose aspirin through this whole pregnancy and I am not taking it but if you had clotting issues they may also discuss lovenox.  Just know that unfortunately there is no "cure" or "prevention" so monitoring and frequent visits as well as baseline and frequent testing are essential.  Like pp said though, you need an Mfm who is very supportive of what you need.  Preeclampsia is terrifying, especially after it has taken your baby, you need a dr who can help comfort you.

These were my major questions too.  I also asked for RPL (repeat pregnancy loss testing) even though it was my first loss to see if there was anything else I needed to worry about.  I also asked for a specific protocol on how frequently I would be getting U/S, BPP/NST and other screenings after viability, and I asked for this to be put in my chart so everyone would be on the same page.

    Good luck!!

  • I don't have much advice that PPs haven't already suggested, but I hope the appointment goes well.
