My LO is 18 months, and I would like to wean him from pacifier use for sleep. At 12 months, we weaned him from daytime pacifier use (or weaned ourselves, I should say). That went just fine, as there were many daytime distractions. We're very fearful of this nighttime business. Presently, he consistently uses the pacifier to fall asleep. I've heard a ton of recommendations, all the way from take the thing away cold turkey, to cutting the tips, and to just "not worry about it! Let him have it!"
For those of you who weaned your toddlers of nighttime pacifier use, please chime in to let me know how you did it. He is a binky addict. He loves them and is very attached to them. Help.
Re: night pacifier use/weaning
I replied in a similar thread the other day. We have been binky free for 8 days now! DD never took it during the day, other than for naps, and also took at for bed at night. Our DCP was off last week, so we thought it was the perfect time to work with DD on this while we were home for the week with her.
On the first two days, we gave her a binky with the tip cut off. When she looked at it funny, we told her it was broken. After two days with the "broken" binky, we told her it was going "bye bye" and I let her watch me throw it away. I reminded her that it was broken.
The next day, we didn't give it to her for either her nap or bedtime, and I am not going to lie, it was rough. It was still rough by the 5th day, and has gotten better since. The past two days and nights, she has gone to bed/nap binky free without fussing! Our DCP is on board too, and we made sure she knows not to give DD the binky there either.
Honestly, I think we could have skipped the whole "broken binky" part and just gone cold turkey, but oh well.
Good luck to you!
