Babies: 6 - 9 Months

When is it ok to put a blanket in the crib?

My LO is attached to this one blanket and I feel bad he can't have it at night.  He doesn't need it draped over him, just as something to hug.  He has it for all his naps.  I'm still a little nervous about putting anything in his crib, I wanted to research to see when it is ok to have something in there but I couldn't find anything

  • The conservative recommendation is not until 12 months. I feel comfortable with my DS having one now though. It's a very breathable blanket and he's quite strong and able to roll and army crawl to get around. I am comfortable with him having a blanket and my guy is younger than yours. I co-sleep so if he were to move around in his sleep (and put the blanket over his face or something) I'm sure I'd wake up. I wake up for every tiny noise that he makes, so that makes me feel even more comfortable allowing this.

  • Thanks!  my son is very strong too so I feel confident he can get himself out of it if he rolled himself in it lol.  I guess I'm still a little nervous about it.  Maybe I should give it more time.

  • Just don't do it until you're comfortable with your decision.  That's my only advice.

  • my baby girl has always slept with one. I tuck it underneath her though, and under her armpits, so that it can't creep up over her face. And I'm up repeatedly through the night to check on her. Plus, her crib is in our room, because of lack of space. So I can listen to her breathing and such. Just this week, she's started moving around the crib in her sleep, but the blanket has stayed under her arms.

  • We've had a blanket with DS for the last couple months. His room gets cold, and even with flannel footie jammies, he was waking up cold several nights a week. We use the A&A blankets that are really thin and breathable, but it's just enough to keep him warm! I tuck it around him and he's never gotten it over his face, even when he turns around in the crib.

  • SIDS recommendations say not until 12 months, which is when they are out of risk for SIDS.

  • We tuck the blanket under the mattress at the bottom and pull it half way up over LO.  She's not a big mover so she hasn't pulled it up or been tangled at all ... yet.  I'm not saying it's safe, this is simply our choice and risk.

  • DS sleeps with his lovey all the time, and when he outgrows his sleep sacks, we will just be using blankets.  I think as long as you feel comfortable, give it a try.

  • I've always used a blanket.  But, we have angel care movement monitors, so if anything were to happen, I'd know.  Plus, you have to only have the blanket to the midsection, and tuck it in.  In addition, I check on my kids often.

  • I let my baby girl sleep with one, just like everyone else i tuck in under her so she can't grab it and pull it over her head. she just likes to have to have something to hug and touch.
