Thoughts on the name Stella

What are your thoughts on Stella? We are down to our short list for our baby girl due in May.  We both like it and think, although it is becoming more popular/trendy, it is not TOO much so.  Also think that it has a little timeless classic appeal.

  • I love it! It's on our short list also. Less trendy than Ella, and definitely classy. Cute for a sweet baby girl or a pretty grown woman. Love it.

  • I do not like the name Stella. I guess because it sounds like star I see it as less classic and more like a Twila sort of name.

  • I agree with you that it seems to be gaining in popularity, but not TOO much.  I think it's a beautiful, classic name.

  • I like it. It's an old-fashioned name making a comeback. I think it has flair.

  • I had my heart set on Stella for a long time - but two different co-workers named their daughter's Stella so we're looking at other options.  Beautiful name though... I love it!

  • I love it. I don't think it's too popular yet, but I think it definitely has the potential to get there eventually. I hope I'm wrong.

  • I love it, but Tori Spelling named her daughter that so I didnt like it anymore for some reason.  Maybe cuz it might get too popular.  But its very pretty!

  • I'm rather biased, seeing as it's my eldest daughter's name, but I just love it.

We named her after my grandmother, as I'd adored her name since my childhood. Then, of course, within several months, Tori Spelling named her child the very same thing, thus creating one of those celebrity baby naming booms that drives me absolutely bonkers.

    Anyways. . . I think it's a wonderful name, regardless of popularity :)

  • I'm in love with Stella. Unfortunately, DH was not.

    I say go for it!

Familiar with the Streetcar Named Desire reference to the name Stella ( i.e. "Stellllaaa!!!")

Do not remember "Stella" name reference in the ending of The Graduate, where Dustin Hoffman is pounding on the glass in the church?, please enlighten......

  • Played out.  As in, overused.  It's one of the old-fashioned names that to me sounds contrived.

This. It has always sounded like someone is trying too hard. I think of stellar or something obnoxious like that. Sorry, NMS.
