Mattress Wrapping???

Has anyone heard of this? A friend of mine sent me a link to a website that claims SIDS is a direct result of toxic gasses emitted by crib mattress (specifically, the chemicals used to make the mattress fire retardant)...I'm having trouble deciding if its something i should take seriously (and wrap my mattress with the $40 plastic bag they're selling) or if its just a scare tactic.

    The mattress I bought said it didn't have toxic chemicals. 

    Plus, I got it in January, so I'm hoping all this 'air out' time also helps in that department.

    I bought a colgate classica, which is suppose to be greenguard certified (low VOC, no toxic chemicals) but the chemicals that they say causes SIDS are the ones mandated by the government to make the mattress flame retardant (apparently all mattresses have to be flame retardant...and that even the mattress pads have these chemicals) and they aren't necessarily toxic at first.

     

    But then I read another article that says its complete bull, so I really just don't know what to think!

    I dont know what to think either.  We were planning on getting an organic mattress, but then I found out that you need a waterproof cover to prevent bacteria growing on the mattress possibly contributing to SIDS... so what would be the point in buying an organic mattress if it has to be sealed with a cover?  So now we are just thinking a low VOC mattress, covering wiht a waterproof cover... but if its all treated with flame retardant junk, the baby is laying on chemicals again!

    I don't know what to think either....

    Honestly, I don't think that's the answer to SIDS.  I'm not sure if we'll ever really know how to 100% prevent SIDS. 

    I don't have DD's mattress wrapped.
