3rd Trimester

When can I start taking Red Rasberry Leaf tea?

I have the worst sore throat, and it is the only tea that I have.  I remember taking it late in my PG last time, I already have pre-term labor issues so I don't want to make it worse.  My dr. has never heard of the stuff so it is pointless to ask her.

Re: When can I start taking Red Rasberry Leaf tea?

  • My midwife's take on the RRL tea is that it doesn't induce contractions, but it has been reported to help make contractions more effective once they do start.  She didn't have a problem with me drinking it all along in the pregnancy (I just think it tastes good).  Something about "toning" the uterus muscles.

  • Oh geez, I meant to end that post with:

Do you have some lemon and honey?  You could drink hot water with lemon and honey and that should help your throat some too, if you're nervous about the tea.

Sorry, Had a pg brain moment and hit post too soon.....

  • Oye vey - ok so we (ie me) have been going back and forth about this a lot lately. Some people say it is totally safe to drink your whole pregnancy, others not. Some say only start drinking after you are beyond 6 weeks, some say drink 1 cup 1st tri, 2 cups 2nd tri, 3 cups 3rd.

I too have pre-term fears BUT I have been drinking it lately. I have some cramping but I think it is unrelated.

JAR has been drinking it throughout her pregnancy both times.

Generally the most common thing I can find it that it tones your uterus but will not start labor. Kinda like oregano or basil are thought to start labor but the quantity you would need is astronomical.

My miswife/doula gives it out at all our Bradley method classes if that helps any...

  • It really does work like a charm!  I pushed out DD in 3 pushes...my OB couldn't believe it!  Thanks!
  • How far along are you? Some people do the only take after 36 weeks thing.

And from what I understand it is good when not preg too - for menstrual cramps, etc.

  • I drink it daily throughout pregnancy.
  • Where can you find this tea?

  • ok i keep hearing all about this tea.

do you just buy it at a normal grocery store or some a specialty store??

  • You can get it at most grocery stores.  Just make sure it is Rasberry Leaf tea and not Rasberry flavored teaSmile  I have been getting mine at Whole Foods as well because they have a couple of different brands.  HTH.

  • The brand that I get is Traditional Medicinal.  It's organic and you can find it at Target, Cub, Rainbow... (I don't know what grocery stores you have locally).  I have not been able to find any other brands at the mainstream stores.

They have pregnancy tea, which has red rasberry leaf in it, but they also have just plain red rasberry leaf tea which has more and it's more concentrated.  I've been drinking the RRL tea since about 36 weeks.  It tastes great!
