Vegas Baby!!!

DH and I get to go to Vegas for a week for a work thing. I have never been to Vegas nor have I even been farther than the far, far, far east side of Louisianna so this will be a lot of fun! We are leaving the 19th and will be back 2/26. WOOT!!!

Anyone have suggestions on shows / actvities / restaurants?

Re: Vegas Baby!!!

  • Any of the Cirque de Soleil shows are worth the money, though some are more risque' than others. Check out The Chandelier Bar at the Cosmopolitan Hotel, too. (Each floor has different specialty drinks. The second floor has this amazing Smores drink with toasted marshmellows on top. YUM!)

     Have fun!

I agree that you should check out The Chandelier Bar -- the whole hotel is really pretty.  We've been twice.  You could check and see if there are any concerts in town that week - we saw Stone Temple Pilots and Kathy Griffen 3 years ago.  We also saw the Beatles Love - it was wonderful!  This past trip in July we saw a comedy show at the Improv at Harrah's.  I would probably pass on that.  It was just okay.

We had dinner at Tao in the Venetian - it was so good!  And we had a great dinner at Tom Collichio's CraftSteak -- sooo good.  We did the Chef's menu, so we didn't even know what we were getting - it was whatever the chef decided to make. It was really fun and felt kind of adventurous :)

We love walking around and looking at the different hotels and casinos.  I know New York New York has a roller coaster in the hotel if you're into that!  I've also heard that Penn and Teller's magic show is pretty good.

    Have fun!

  • Bobby Flay's restaurant (Mesa Grill, in Caesar's) is AMAZING!  Nob Hill inside MGM is good, too.  We also liked Dos Caminos in the Palazzo a lot.  We've only seen one show, but I agree that anything Cirque is probably worth seeing.  Don't forget to check out the fountains at the Bellagio!

They had Body Worlds at the Luxor when we were there 2 years ago which is really cool if you're interested in medical type stuff.  The Titanic display (also at Luxor) was also pretty cool, and the aquarium at Mandalay Bay is fun, too.

If you go off the Strip at all, check out Ethel M's chocolate factory.  They have amazing chocolates!!  I think you can also buy them in the airport.

  • Wow! That is a lot of fun, great stuff to do! I love Cirque so we probably will check that out. That sounds like A LOT of fun. I defn. want to go around and check out the different hotels, I love being noisy. We are staying at Harrah's, hopefully it will be nice. :D

A rollar Coaster in a hotel?!?! that sounds so foreign to me! can't wait to check it out.

And I am all about some chocolate so I will have to check out Ethels' chocolate factory.

    :D

  • Have fun...

Vegas can be super expensive.  Keep in mind that there's tons of free stuff and just seeing all of the hotels and their displays is fun.  I love the floral at Bellagio!

I guess I am a cheapskate when we go to Vegas :)    That said, the Charlie Palmer Steakhouse at the Four Seasons is truly the best ever.  I still dream about their short ribs!

  • First of all, that's going to be a looooong time to be in Vegas. I think 3 days max is perfect. With that said, pepper activities throughout your stay. We go about once or twice a year (just got back actually) and these are some of my fave things to do:

-Circ show, definitely! They are all good, we just happen to like "O".

-Blue Man Group at the Venetian but the night is even better if you eat at Tao beforehand.

-Shop at the Fashion Mall and DON'T MISS happy hour at Ra (Sushi). Do me a huge favor and get the "hot mess" entree. I swear...you'll never be the same. ;) We tell all our friends and family and they always love it. Great prices too.

-If at all possible, see Garth Brooks. It is in the top 10 life experiences I've ever had. Small crowd, lots of personal stories and lots of singing/dancing/laughing. Just him and a guitar. Amazing.

-Hit the outlet malls SOUTH. They have most the stores at the Fashion Mall but at better prices. We spent 4 hours there one afternoon and it was fun. It's a bit of a cab ride ($20ish) but worth it.

-Just for the fun people watching side of things, go to Fremont Street. They have live music, a light show and lots of crazy things to see. This is also a longer cab ride ($25ish) but a must see.

-I hate buffets but, oh my word, the buffet at the Aria is out of this world. It's $75/person so come starving. ;)

-The roller coaster on top of the Ny/Ny is super fun. That's a great hotel in general to go spend some time in. Their food area is made to look like city streets in NY...fun stuff. There is a Mexican restaurant inside that area that we went to twice (because it was so good). Also, the dueling piano bar was an absolute blast!

-I agree with Craftsteak and Nob Hill inside MGM but I want to add Witchcraft to that list. It's gourmet sandwiches and oh, so yummy.

-When you are walking the strip, everything looks closer than it is. Wear comfy shoes.

-Everything costs double so be prepared to spend a lot of dough. This sounds pretty cheapskate but we bought a big bottle of Malibu and a 12 pack of coke off strip and took it to our room and made a drink or two before we went to dinner to save money.

Okay, that's all for now. HAVE FUN!! Take naps! Enjoy the food and shows! You'll come home poor and exhausted and "so ready to be home" and start immediately planning your next trip... ;)

  • Thanks Smash!!!!!   I know a week is a long time, we are going to be in boring work conference's during the day but are planning on playing at night. $75 per person for a buffett!! WOWSA! lol - ok, defn. need to bring a lot of money with us. :D

You gave great, awesome advice and I am down with making my own drinks to save money. I do that now at home. :D

  • All advice is good.....check for discounted tickets to tours and shows at tickets 4tonight booths when you get there. There is a website that shows booth locations.  You'd be surprised by what you can get for your money.

Now, when there is a huge headline act, full price is no shame.  I would pay full price for Garth Brooks in a heartbeat. I did for Cher and Barry Manilow and went silly giddy for the experience.  I mean really,  I did not care that I was so close that I could see all of the hip replacements clicking...to sing Copacabana WITH Barry and I Got You Babe WITH Cher?  Really?

Did I just date myself as an "older mom" on this board?

Free stuff: pirate ship at Treasure Island, go to Freemont Street downtown, MGM Lion Exhibit, the Mirage exhibits, people watching.

Since it is a long trip, try to get a trip to Hoover Dam or Grand Canyon in.  You mentioned you have not travelled west.....you may regret no seeing the majesty of the Grand Canyon.  It is eye watering awesomeness.  A long day for sure but memorable.

Don't forget a good old fashioned spa day.   Have fun!

  • I will be in vegas at the same time you will!! WE have gone several times.  I enjoy just walking up and down the stip and checking out the interesting people. Definitely check out the water show outside the bellagio. I love the brunch buffet at Paris.  LOVE the spa at Caesars...teh best massage I ever had!!! EVER!!

Like some others said..Red Rock Canyon is awesome!

    Have a great time!!!!
