Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Can I skip Rice and Oatmeal cereal and go for Veggies?

My LO is about to turn 6 months and I have tried giving him rice cereal last week but he was super gassy from it so I stopped after the first attempt.
I was wondering if it's safe to just make fresh veggie pure and mix it with BM?

Also do you feed your baby breakfast, lunch and dinner with solids besides BM or Formula?

  • Yes!  Studies have shown there is no reason to give cereal before veggies.  My son's first food was avocado and he is now eating (and LOVING) sweet potatoes!  They say avocado, sweet potato and banana are all good first foods.  I do have organic short grain brown rice and organic oats to grind for cereal but that would only be to thicken his pur?ed food.  Aside from his pur?ed foods he is EBF.

  • Definitely skip it. DS hated it, and it was a waste of time and money. Start with one solid meal a day, then go to 2, then 3. We are just starting 3 meals a day now (DS is 8 months old).

  • This is kinda a silly question to ask a bunch of strangers.

Yes, you can skip cereals altogether.  Begin with purees or go straight on to holdable foods ala Baby Led Weaning.

  • I am skipping cereal because there is no nutritional value.  I just started giving her some pureed sweet potatoes last week.  I just gave her a teaspoon or two at dinner time in between bottles just to get her used to eating solids.  I will probably continues this until about 6 months, and then try 2 meals, then 3 meals around 9 months.  That way, by 1 year old, they are used to eating 3 solid meals each day.

Thanks to all. I am skipping cereal :)
As to the post above. Yes it is pretty silly and I have already researched it before but I just wanted to see what you ladies are doing about it and if cereal was really in your baby's first solids list.
