VBAC

Questions, Advice about VBAC

So I have decided to try for a VBAC. I see a high risk doc and my regular OB, and they are both fine with me trying. They stated that I could not be induced and that they would go ahead and schedule a c-section for a week past my due date. My OB said she would be comfortable if I came in at 3-4 cm dialted, she would do low dose pitocin.

With my son, well let me start out by saying I had the worst prenantal care ever I think. It was an office where you visit with every OB bc you are not guaranteed to be delivered by the one you pick. So towards the end of my pregnancy I saw like 5 different OB's and a nurse practioner like 4 times. Well I swore I was having issues with high blood pressure starting at around 30 weeks. Well they all dismissed it like I was crazy. I was not leaking protein, and my blood pressure was OK. But it would come and go alot.I was incredibly swollen, towards the end I would gain 5-10 pds every time I went in. At 39 weeks I had gone into l&d bc I thought I was leaking amniotic fluid, well I wasnt but as I was being monitored my blood pressure was high. So they kept me to induce. Started with cervidil at 8 p.m. at 8 a.m. not much change so they started me on pitocin and OB broke my water. Throughout the day everytime they would up the pitocin, DS heartrate would drop down. By 7 p.m. I was 7 cm dilated and had an epidural. Well they tried one last time to up the pitocin and his heartrate dropped very low. With that and the extra swelling and my high blood pressure I was having the OB wanted to do a c-section. By that point I was miserable, and agreed. The c-section was the worst thing I have ever been through in my life. I couldnt get numb enough at first. At the end when DH and DS left I started panicking for some reason. Literally I couldnt breathe, I was shaking and I was nauseas. Once I got back to my room they started me on magnesium, so I couldnt get out of bed for 48 hrs. I was so exhausted afterwards I didnt even get to enjoy the little bit of time I had with DS before they took him to the nursery for the night. Only bc I was so tired I couldnt do anything. So now you know why I dont want to go through that again. And I understand it was an emergency and it wouldnt be like that again if it was scheduled.

But I have always dreamed of having a vaginal birth and getting to experience that. So I really want this VBAC. So if you have any recommendations. As far as what you did to naturally go into labor, etc. My biggest fear of VBAC is not going into labor and end up with a c-section.I have fears of rupturing, but it will be almost 4 years since my c-section. Thanks ladies if you made it this far. But I feel its better to know the history. Also any recommendations to ease family and friends minds. Some of them are driving me crazy. LOL

Re: Questions, Advice about VBAC

  • Welcome!

I have no advice as far as prompting labor goes but wanted to reassure you that MOST women will go into labor by 41 weeks.

It's great that your doctor realizes that and is open to you going that long.

since you had blood pressure issues last time you might want to follow the Brewer diet as it seems to help avoid PIH and Pre-E. You are more likely to experience that again this time.

there is some great info you can share with your family in the post below about VBAC resources.

    Good Luck!

  • I also had rotating OB's since I went to a clinic. I had no idea of who would be delivering me. I was 41 weeks and no progress only 1-2 cm's. They would not give me cervadil so they scheduled a RCS. I went in for my surgery and the OB suggested a foley catheter to open the cervix. This procedure is VERY effective. Also the rupture risk is 1%, thats a 99% chance of everything going fine! As far as family and friends go, just reassure them that VBACs are normal and the old "once a c/s always a c/s" is old and antiquated.

  • Just wait and see :) Your body will go into labor if it is suppose to :)  The reason they will not give you anything to promote labor is because of the risk for uterine rupture. They will wait until your water breaks or your cervix is changing.  At that point they will start pitocin if needed.

Walking tends to help induce labor. As does sex...but please note that each will cause you to contract more, not always put you into labor.  If your body isn't ready you will just end up contracting and not dilating.

GOOD LUCK to you! I hope it works out and you can have a VBAC! In the end you will have a healthy little baby which ever way the delivery goes!
