Is it really hard to travel?

Am I the only one who would rather travel than host? I don't mean just for holidays, I mean any time.  I think cookinh, cleaning, entertaining, etc is way more stressful than driving in a car for 10 hours.

I see so many posts from people who fell "If family wants to see us, the can get off their as*ses and come see us."  I was wondering if anyone feels the way I do.

Oh, an MIL lives 10 hours (if we drive straight through) away and we make the trip about 4 times a year, so it's not like I don't understand the difficulty of a long trip.

Re: Is it really hard to travel?

  • We travel all the time, but I also host a lot of parties throughout the year. I guess we do a little of both. I like either one.
  • I'd tend to agree. I am totally anal Martha Stewartish when I host, so it's stress rather than fun for me.

Besides, for the last 5 years Thanksgiving has been 25+ people and growing as kids get married and have more kids. Better my cousin Leslie in CT than me. LOL

  • I like both. We usually host as dh's family diesn't do much for the holidays and we have a lot of friends that live here that aren't from around this area but if dh could get time off work around the holidays we would go home to my family.Christmas at my grandmother's house has 50+ people every year. I am not sure we even have enough places for everyone to sit.
  • We do both and it doesn't bother me. It is a nice change of pace to visit others, but I also love to travel and getting on an airplane doesn't bother me at all. When we lived in NorCal, we had to travel back to SoCal every holiday. More of that attitude might have more to do w/ relationships than the actual travel.

  • I usually say/do that because I know the majority of DHs family won't make the drive to see us and then I don't have to deal with them.. hahahah.
  • It's a balance for me.  We drive close to 10 hours, or have to fly 6 to get to any family, so we're used to it, too.  Most of my family is all close by to each other, as is DH's (on the other side of the country) so if we want to not be alone, we have to travel.

Although, if I EVER told my mom to "come to me," she'd remind me that when we were young, they had to cart us all around...and that's how it'll be for us, too.

That said, if friends are coming for a long weekend, or an easy more-friendish holiday like Thanksgiving, I am all about hosting.

I go ALL out.  But, am laid back enough that I tend to not get overly stressed.

  • We hate to travel right now, but only because DS1 has become car sick, and I spend the entire drive turned around (which in turn makes me car sick) holding a blanket near him to make sure he doesn't get sick. For being at home/in our area, I'd definitely rather go to someone else's house - then I don't need to clean, buy so much, clean up alone afterward! We're lucky to have the inlaws always willing to come to us!
