Issues with my K'tan - Help!

Hi all,

Hoping someone can help me.  I have an 8 lb baby girl and I'm trying to use my K'tan in a kangaroo hold but I'm having issues.

My K'tan is an XS and I'm wondering if it's not fitting properly.  I'm 5'0'' and 125 lbs so I think I have the right size but it keeps slipping.

I wrap her in the kangaroo hold and she starts in the right position, I can kiss her head, etc. but within a few minutes, she starts to slip down to toward my belly button.  I've tried readjusting the straps, spreading them more on my shoulders, etc.  I've tugged the back loop down to the middle of my back , etc. and it won't stay there!!  I'm at my wits end.  I love wearing her but only for the first few minutes until she starts slipping.  My DH has tried to help me adjust it but he thinks it might be too big for me.

Can you guys suggest anything?  I've scoured the K'tan website and searched on the internet but I just can't find anything.

Thanks!!!

Currently back stateside but missing Kenya!

  • I don't have one, but I did a lot of reading and video watching on them when trying to chose which carrier I want. Are you using the tie that came with it too or just the two rings? It seems you should be able to tuck the bottom of the tie up under her butt so it's between you two with the rest around her back and then pull that tighter around behind you to hold her higher. I've also seen a lot of people recommending washing and drying it as it tends to stretch with wear and the dryer shrinks it up and makes it tighter .

  • I never had very much success with the K'tan.  It always stretched on me within the half hour of wearing it.. Like PP said, try washing and drying it and make sure it's tied tightly.

  • My LO was never as small as yours on the outside but we've used the K'tan from almost the start.  Do you have a good pocket in the side that is closest to your body?  Make sure you have fabric between you and baby.  When you pull the second ring up tuck that around baby as well making a second pocket.  This took me some trial and error to get it also keeps that ring on your shoulder better.  Also when mine is stretching out and I need to reshrink it I take the "extra" that's formed arround her butt and tuck it under her, snugs things back up.  I know a lot of people don't love the K'tan but at months and over 17lbs I used it twice today to put the munchkin down for her naps.  It's my go to when she's fighting sleep.

  • I'm not of help, but wanted to say that I feel the same way.  I'm 5'5" so I got the small and started using it when DD2 was born, she got down to 7# and even with such a light weight I felt like she drifted downward.  The irony is that with it being a lit oversized I still can't nurse in it because she tries to stretch and feels too constrained.

  • Lurked here... I never got the kangaroo hold to work so I moved straight to the hug hold, using the fabric to support her head like it says in the instructions. Then my K'Tan became a lifesaver. I still use it all the time in the same hold as when she was a newborn, and she's 20 lbs now.
