1st Trimester

Length of a torso...

So I got my BFP this past Wednesday and my mind has been spinning with all kinds of questions and thoughts...

One of them being, I'm 5'10, in good health, 150 lbs and have about 3" of space between my ribs and hip bone measuring from my side. Do long torsos "hide" bumps longer? My mom didn't gain a lot of weight with me while she was pregnant (26 lbs total) and is a smaller person too...

Do any of you girls have longer torsos? Similar dimensions? What happened with your bump(s)?

Re: Length of a torso...

  • I am so curious to see how bumps play out actually, I am just the opposite of you I am 5'0 and very petite and I have a very short torso.  My mother is a very small person and only gained about 20 lbs with my siblings and I, but having such a short torso she had a pretty good size bump to see, she said there wasn't anywhere for the baby to grow but out, so I have always wondered if I will be the same.  Here's to happy bump watching!

  • Interesting! Even though I'm the oldest of 4, we are so close in age I really don't remember my mom being pregnant and there aren't any pictures of her pregnant either (excluding her wedding photos where you can't tell at all even though she is 4.5 months along!) I am happy to keep my flat tummy as long as possible :) I'm very lucky and don't gain weight in my arms, my booty or in my face much (when my weight does fluctuate) I hope I get to be one of those cute lil mommas with just the bump :) I'm being pretty conscious of taking my prenatals, eating well and taking care of myself...too many moms "eat for two" and interpret that as two grown adults!

  • in my opinion (and experience) i say yes, torso does play a huge part in the way you show and when you show. i'm 5'8" and was 135-140 prepregnancy and have a very long torso and with both my pregnancies it took forever to actually see my bump. with my first i finally showed with a true bump (not just looking chunky) at almost 7 months. with this one i finally got my bump at almost 6 months. i have a friend with a shorter torso and she popped before 20 weeks. again just my opinion and experience.

This was my experience too with DS.

  • I'm 5'0 and I started showing at 12 weeks with my first one and only gained 18lbs. I did have a rough time in the end since LO was in my ribs and I had no room to even breath.  My doctor said I was constricting his growth a bit (which is definitely not a problem now).  With this one, I started showing last week.

My SIL on the other hand is 5'10 and didn't show until closer to 20 weeks or so. She was never really uncomfortable.

    You might have it best!

  • I am built with a short torso and long legs.

I'm 5'7'' and weighed 130lbs when I got pg with ds.  I didn't start showing until I was 25 weeks or so.  So, for me it had nothing to do with torso length.

~after 34 cycles we finally got our 2nd little bundle of joy~

  • I'm 5'9" and I just measured between my hip bone and my rib cage (because I was curious) and discovered that I have 4 inches between them. So I now understand why it took FOREVER for me to show with my first pregnancy. On the bright side, I never found it difficult to breathe during my first pregnancy and more or less stayed comfortable. There was just plenty of space for my son to spread out.
  • I am now 29 weeks and am 5'8" with a long torso. I didn't really show till a few weeks ago. And because it is winter most people wouldn't even guess I'm pregnant because between sweatshirts & coats you can't tell. My mom said it was the same with her and her sisters. I am the shortest out of the 4 of us.

  • I'm 5'6'' and 115lb, with DD I didn't show until 26-28 weeks (can't remember exactly) I know I wasn't in maternity clothes until later fall, DD was born in January so 7ish months.

Once I did show - it looked like there was a basketball stuffed under my shirt. From the back you really couldn't tell I was pregnant.

I gained 30 lbs, but started loosing some weight before she was born, but I was 2 weeks overdue also. I weighed 25 lbs more before she was born.

I was back in my pre-pregnancy jeans the day after I came home from the hospital.
