Nighttime accidents...better with time?

Hi everyone. Looking for a little advice...

My daughter (3 yrs, 3 mos) has been totally potty trained in the daytime for a couple months. I can't remember the last accident. However, we are still struggling with nights. We stopped using diapers at night about a month ago, and since then she's been consistently wetting the bed maybe 3-4 times a week. I've been of the mind that this will get better with time, but it's been pretty consistent so far.

The thing is, about half he time she's totally fine. She'll use the potty in her room or come get me and tell me she needs the potty. I havent been able to figure out any differences in these nights vs accident nights. She also hates being wet. I stay totally positive, but she often is crying.

Any ideas? Just wait it out?

thanks!

  • night time is not something you can really train them for it has to do with them being ready and able to recognize the need while sleeping.  I personally would put her in a diaper or pull up for bed till she can keep that dry for a month.

  • I definitely have been thinking about going back to a pull-up at night. Part of the problem is that she absolutely refuses to wear one. It's hard to get her in one without a fit.
  • When DD was potty trained, we went from diapers all the time to underwear during the day and pull-ups at night, but we told her they were "night time underwear." That demonstrated to her that there was a difference between them and diapers.

It can take kids over a year sometimes after day time potty training to become nighttime trained--I know because after 9 months of being day time potty trained, DD is still frequently wet. While it helps them to have an awareness of what they need to do, it really is often developmental.

  • Yes, the prob is developmental...but I have a few tips to help.  (You may be doing these aleady.)  Cut off liquids an hour or so before bed.  We bedshare, so I'd wake up to my LO thrashing around just before an accident happened.  Eventually, I clued in to the signal and took my LO to the potty in the middle of the night.  My LO would go back to sleep with no issue.  You could modify this by taking your LO to the potty before you go to bed.  For example: your LO goes to bed at 8:30, but you get her up for a potty trip before you go to bed at 11pm.

  • My dd has been daytime or for a year and a half now but still wears a diaper at bedtime. Pediatrician says it's developmental. We are just waiting it out. She will get there eventually:). (hopefully!)
  • DD is nearly 4 1/2 and still pees almost every single night.  Clearly she isn't ready to be in underwear at night, so she wears Goodnights for night time.  I've been told by friends to keep her in those until she consistently isn't wet at night.  We cut off all liquids about an hour before bed time, and she uses the potty right before bed, but you can't rush nighttime potty training.

  • Well, last night I cut off liquids at 6:30 (hour before bedtime), and then had her go to the potty at 11 when I went to bed. No accident. I think I'll see if this works.

After a few days, if it's not working consistently I'll go in after she's asleep and put her in a pull up (to avoid a fight). Thanks for everyone's help!

I agree with PP's that you can't rush nighttime training, but a possible solution to the fact that your DD hates her pull-up is to get a cloth training brief. They look and feel more like regular underwear but absorb the pee and protect her clothes and sheets. You can buy them online at cloth diaper websites like kellyscloset.com. HTH!

  • Lurker agian,

But when we potty trained ds1 it was all or nothing. I would cut off liquids about an hour before bed, potty before bed, potty again before I went to bed, then potty again as soon as H got up for work (early).  We did this for a month and his body learned to wake itself up. We have not had a night time accident as of yet 2 years later.

  • My almost 5yo DD  has been day trained since she was barely 2 & is still wet most nights.  It is developmental.

3 years later and we are still waiting for the nighttime trained!

  • DS has been day trained since 25 months, he'll be 4 tomorrow and has never ever woken up dry ever.  The pediatrician isn't concerned and his bladder will mature eventually.

  • Honestly, I would put her in pull-ups at night and get back to getting a good night sleep.  You can't train or force night time potty training - it happens with time when your child is ready and nothing you do will make it happen before your child is ready.  Many kids night train a year or more after they are day trained.  Some kids day train at 2-3 years old and are 6-7 before they night train.  It is more a physical thing than daytime as your child needs to sense that they need to pee, wake up and then get out of bed and get to the bathroom before they actually pee - its not easy.  My DD was daytrained at age 3 and just in the last 2 weeks (she will be 4 in a month) has she night trained.  We had her in a pull up at night until 2 weeks ago when she told she was ready to go without and she has done excellent, no accidents.  I never pushed her training day or night and told her when she was ready for no pull-up, we would do it.  She had been having an accident at night every few weeks for the last few months but was mainly staying dry all night.  I have a nephew who was close to 10 before he was accident free and I have an 8 year old niece who still has the occasional accident.  And they there are kids like my older DD who night train first!
