Trying to Get Pregnant

Is my doctor an idiot?

I guess she is actually a PA, I went in because I have had this horrible death cold for a month and couldn't take it anymore- all last week I was in bed before 8 and had a low fever one or two days too- anyway she wanted to give me antibiotics 8 dpi and I said only if I can be sure I am not pregnant. She says, we will dive you a blood test. I asked what the chance of false negative was and she said none, they are valid from the day of conception. Ok- I take the test with a BFN. But then today (a week before my expected period, and 10 dpo) I get pink spotting (2 drops I would say). We did the biz right around positive opk so I wouldn't be surprised if it worked but is my dr crazy or is the blood test really the final word on the issue and my spotting a total fluke?

    Umm, no.

Do you normally have a 17 day LP?

Ummm, the spotting could mean a number of things.

The NP is wrong and it sounds like you're fishing.  Although, the weather IS nice today.

I don't think your doctor is the idiot here.

  • HCG isn't produced until after implantation, so a blood test would not be valid the day of conception.  8DPO there is a chance that implantation hasn't occured yet so I wouldn't trust the result.

Unfortunately since you only have a 20% chance of conceiving on any given month, chances are it didn't "work" and that you're not PG.

Blood tests are as accurate as you can get at this point in detecting PG so if your blood test was negative, you're not PG.

Take a HPT this weekend if it puts your mind at ease though and obviously if it's positive, call your doc to see what to do about the meds. Hope you feel better soon!

  • OP - first, your wedding pictures are gorgeous.

Second, there are antibiotics you can take that are safe to take while pregnant. I think that is a better place to start than trying to second guess whether you are pregnant or not at 8-10 dpo. Call your PA and make sure you are taking an antibiotic that is safe to take while pregnant.

Third, your PA is wrong, blood tests are not valid from the moment of conception.

Good luck and feel better soon.

    All of this.

Some people like to play on the safe side while TTC and just treat themselves like they *could* be pregnant at any given time.  I would ask for some pregnancy-friendly anitbiotics if you're concerned.  However, the baby won't share your blood supply until week 6 or thereabouts, so I wouldn't get too worked up over it.

  • A beta isn't the final word, BUT paired with a progesterone, they're pretty spot-on.

For example, the clinic I work in has a policy that prior to putting in IUDs or administering Depo, we check a beta and progesterone. The beta indicates whether or not youre pregnant (from implantation and beyond), where the progesterone indicates if you're at a point in your cycle where it's possible that you could BECOME pregnant (with sperm that are hanging around) or could have a fertilized egg that's on it's way to possible implantation.

    Hope this helps :-)

  • My PA always gives me pregnancy safe antibiotics since she knows we are trying. It is possible to still be pregnant if implantation hadn't occurred before the blood test.
