I can give you a brief synopsis - I wasn't on the bump for my first and don't feel like searching for my most recent.
VBAC #1 - Successful VBAC 27 mo after my emergency c-section. Labor was spontaneous at 40w4d and lasted 4.5 hours from start to finish (with an epidural, of course!) - I pushed for maybe half an hour. I had significant tearing, plus an episiotomy, which sucked. I had almost no support by the end from my OB group - they all assumed I would end up as a RCS. I have to admit, it felt good to prove them wrong.
VBAC #2 - After switching practices, I found a dr who fully supports VBACs and never questioned my decision. It had been 4 yrs since my last VBAC and this go around I wasn't nervous at all about my decision. Labor started spontaneously at 39w4d and lasted about 8.5 hours (again, with an epidural), but only 5 minutes of pushing. There was NO new tearing - just a slight tear on my episiotomy scar, which only required one stitch. I was back to normal by the time I left the hospital two days later. If only all of my LD&R could have been so easy!
I'm not sure if I ever posted it here, so here it is...or what I remember of it almost 11 months later!
DS #1 was a c/s at 40weeks 1 day after an induction and 3 hours of pushing. He was face up and 8lbs 5oz.
I had my 37 week appointment with #2 on a Wednesday. I was 3cm and told I was having a big baby, so not to get my hopes up. I woke up often that night just uncomfortable and finally at 4:30 got up and went to the couch. Immediately I noticed I was having contractions 5 minutes apart. After an hour on the couch I showered to see if they went away. They didn't so I woke DH up and I finished trying to get ready. We called the OB and she said to wait until they were closer. After I hung up the phone they went right to two minutes apart. So we decided it was time to go!
We got DS to my parents house and arrived at the hospital at 7am. I was 6cm when they checked me. It took them forever to get an IV and they had to run some bloodwork before I was allowed to get my epidural because I have low platelet levels. It came back fine so I got my epidural...or so I thought! (more on that later) I finally was comfortable so DH went to get some breakfast. While he was gone DS wasn't cooperating so they had to break my water to monitor internally. Almost immediately after that happened I started having a lot of pain. The anesthesiologist tried to redose my epidural but it wasn't helping, he tried again...nothing. So a second Dr. came in and he figured out that it had come out and I was not getting any pain relief at all. I was 8cm at that point. DS was coming down crooked and there was no way I was going to be able to push, so my OB had to literally force anesthesia to redo my epidural. It took him 6 attempts while I was lying on my side, contracting every 2 minutes to finally get it in.
So finally around noon I was pain free again. DS was still crooked so they had me lay as much on my side/belly as possible to encourage him to turn. Shortly after 1 I started pushing and at 2:33 he was born. 7lbs 2oz, 20 inches.
Soon after delivery I started getting a headache. The nurses assured me it was just from pushing. They moved me to postpartum and I noticed fluid leaking from my epidural site. Come to find out the first anesthesiologist actually gave me a combined spinal/epidural to give me pain relief quicker when I first arrived at the hospital. I vaugely remember him saying that, but you all know you aren't thinking clearly at 6+ centimeters! So if you have a spinal you need to lay flat for a period of time to avoid a headache. Nobody made me do this and I was leaking spinal fluid. I had a horrible headache that was only relieved by laying flat. The next day I had a bloodpatch (an epidural where they inject your own blood back in to close up the hole) It worked and we went home on schedule the next day.
The evening on my first night home the headache came back. I tried to get through it, but I was literally uncapable of doing anything but laying there. I've never experienced worse pain in my life. We were instructed to go back to the hospital the next day for a second bloodpatch. After it I was admitted to the hospital on strict bedrest. After 24 hours they stood me up to see if it worked...it didn't. The headache came back immediately. So they then did a third bloodpatch under sedation to get more blood in (it's extremely painful when they inject your blood in) I spent more time on bedrest before we tested it again. It finally worked and I was able to go home.
It was definitely a crazy birth and I've had a hard time dealing with what happened. Being on bedrest and away from my baby and being in so much pain caused us some huge problems BFing and we had to stop. I feel very cheated, especially because I wasn't informed on the spinal, and because I wasn't taken care of properly. If I had been, this all could have been avoided...just by me lying flat for a few hours. I'm still happy I got to experience a vaginal birth, but if there is a third baby I will definitely be doing it natural to avoid all that!
My DS was born via c/s after going into labor naturally at 41 weeks 2 days. After my water broke (naturally), his heartrate went down and they were having difficulty getting it to recover. I was transferred from a free standing birth center to the hospital. After an hour of monitoring there and no real improvement, DS was born via c/s. He was over 10 lbs and his head was twisted a little so it wasn't in proper birthing position (and his cord was being compressed as a result).
My VBAC was at 41 weeks, 1 day- successful pit. induction. At my 40 week appointment, I was almost completely effaced but not dilated at all. Hospital policy required that I deliver by 41 weeks, so we set an induction for then hoping I'd go on my own before. After miles of walking and everything else, I arrived for my induction at 7:30 am. When they hooked me to the monitors to check me, they saw I was contracting regularly every 10 minutes, but not that I could feel.
A foley bulb induction was attempted but failed because I wasn't dilated enough to get it in. I was started on pit around 8 am and they slowly bumped it up every 30 minutes until I was good and uncomfortable. By 10 pm, I had been having contractions 2 minutes on/2 minutes off for hours and only made it to 5 cm. I was exhausted and opted for an epidural so I could take a nap. The epidural was finally given at 11:30 pm.
At 12:45 am, I told the nurse that I felt like I was going to poop. She ran and got my midwife to check me and I was ready to push! I had dilated 5 cm and labored down in my sleep and it only took 30 minutes of pushing to get her out. Minor tear. Baby was 8.5 lbs. Everyone healthy.
Inifinitely better recovery than my c/s. I was able to care for both my baby and my toddler immediately without any issues.
Re: Post your VBAC/RCS birth story here
I had to dig around on google to find it - stupid Bump won't let me access my posts that are older than a year. Anyhoo, link!
