2nd Trimester

Red rash around nose during 2nd trimester... please help!

Good morning!  I am 18 weeks pregnant with my first and right around the start of my second trimester I started to get this red rash on the sides of my nose and it hasn't gone away.  It's itchy, gets dry quickly (no matter how much moisturizer I use) and looks like it is made of small bumps that flake when they get dry.  I've always had relatively good skin with an even complexion so this driving me crazy!!!  Has this happened to anybody else?  Are there any recommendations to help with the dry, itchiness and/or the redness or is this something that may only clear up after I give birth?  I can deal with the redness... it's mostly the itchy and flakiness that drive me nuts!  Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

Re: Red rash around nose during 2nd trimester... please help!

  • this sounds like what happened to my girlfriend. she had these huge breakout rashes. She has always had amazing skin. When she got it checked out it was some weird condition that required a special cream, she did eventually find something that worked and it went away after the baby was born and i'll. I can check and see what it was.....

  • i agree with pp about perioral dermatitis. i got that from using toothpaste with sodium laurel sulfate...sls...when i stopped, it went away.

  • Wait, so you guys got this when you were pregnant and using a certian toothpaste?  All you did was switched toothpastes and it stopped?

Now that I think of it I switched to a different kind right after Christmas, and I hit my 2nd tirmester shorlty after that.... I'll look into this more. Thanks for the insights!

  • I got this at the corners of my mouth towards the end of the 2nd trimester so i looked like a vampire until i found gold bond ultimate lotion with shea butter.   It was the only thing that kept the area looking decent.  But i had to apply it religiously throughout the day.  My doctor said it happens to some women during pregnancy... people get the rashy areas in different places on their face.  Maybe the toothpaste thing will work for you.  For me it wasn't a matter of toothpaste.  I've been using the same one for the last 5 years.  Good luck!

BTW i just thought of something... maybe aquaphor will help.  That's what the pedi's always recommend for baby rashes.  I'm going to try that if it happens again this time around.

  • ditto perioral dermatitis. I had to get a topical antibiotic from dermatologist to have it go away. Use pepsodent toothpaste and nothing else. Switching toothpaste didnt make a difference in a few weeks (for me), so I had to do the topical antibiotic.
