jennieliz or Mommyof4boys

I am so confused by jennieliz's timeshare post and had to ask.  Did you buy that many weeks each year or do you get to use one week a year for 40/52 years?  We bought a Marriott timeshare in Aruba and have 2 weeks and I think technically it is supposed to be a contract for something like 99 years, I honestly don't know the exact details of that part but am now thinking I need to read the contract.  We paid a cost for the actual week (around $14,500 per week) and then have a maintenance fee that changes yearly, something like $1500 a week right now but of course it was only $900 a week maintenance when we started in 2004.  The screwed up thing is that they are currently selling them for double that but I know we would never get our money back if we sold, it sucks and I have no idea where to even begin to try to sell one week.

I'm totally butting in here. I'm avoiding folding some laundry :)

You can rent your week or sell the entire timeshare on redweek.com. They are also listed on ebay.

If you are not in love with your timeshare, I'd sell if you can. Sooner or later, you will be hit with a special assessment for a new roof or something.

  • We bought 52 weeks and can use as many or as little as we want at a time. As soon as the 52 weeks are over we're done with the ownership. If we pass away before we use the weeks the ownership goes to our oldest son Joshua.  It's through Palace Resorts but we are members of RCI and can trade anywhere. I haggled with the people and we got them to knock 1/2 of the price off when we bought it. I may have been drunk on mimosa's but was able to work some with them.  We also got free flights, that had an expiration date to them, and 4 free stays.  We got a few free rounds of golf and a few other perks as well.

We pay no maintenance fee as we don't own an actual property just the right to the weeks.  That worked in our favor after the hurricanes hit Cancun a few years ago. Where we had stayed had to be completely re-done.  We have let others stay there and use our weeks. DH let his brother use 2 weeks. I had asked him to sell the weeks but he gave them as a gift. That was a mighty expensive present, IMO.  I was told to look sell on e-bay and places like that if you want to look at selling weeks.  The problem is that RCI, technically doesn't allow people to sell weeks but people do anyway.

  • We actually love our timeshare and we sometimes use and sometimes exchange but we don't have the ability to get away as much as our timeshare allows, we always use it but it is not the best use of our money especially if we are not staying at our resort.  But I am also scared to get stuck with eBay fees and not sell it, I also don't know how to deal with the legal side of it.
