DH can retire in like 10-15 years, and we are planning on renting an RV and taking the boys across country, before they graduate from HS. I would also like to take them to Ireland. I will have the ability to retire I think when I am 55.
We want to travel, travel, travel.....We have talked about owning a small place on water, but we will see, but I know that we want to travel.
But also not to be a downer, I have had a few older friends who have died/lost their SO soon after retiring, and it definitely makes he want to live in the moment, and not just sock every extra penney away for retirement. I want to take at least one big trip a year until then, just in case, as you just never know.

That's exactly what we think. Not to be morbid but even getting to retirement isn't a guarantee. We drive older cars, have a small ranch home, buy all our clothes on clearance but we vacation as much as possible

Our retirement dream is to build a house deep in the Adirondacks, preferably with lake access. A big workshop for DH, he also wants/plans to learn to fly and get a pilot's lisence some day. So maybe a buy seaplane or something, make some side money on sightseeing tours. I don't know what I will do, probably learn to knit, sew or something. Of course the likelihood of ever being able to afford it is slim.
I have never thought of retirement or my golden years. I don't even know what my dreams are for right now. DH is 14 years older so he would be able to retire but won't b/c that is right when sophia will go to college that is about all we know. I don't plan on waiting to take some big trip or some life changing move when we retire. I want to travel while I am young and can take the kids

This is exactly what my FIL did. Never put a penney into anything but his own investments, MIL and kids went without a lot of basics under the premise that they were poor. Then FIL passed away in his sleep 6 months to the day from his retirement. MIL now has more money then she knows what to do with and more money coming in from pensions and whatnot than the average 2 income household. We live somewhere in the middle. We have the house and things we want right now, but also plenty of savings and investments. I sometime have to remind DH we could afford a little more and invest a little less, but he was raised so tight walleted it is difficult. Then he reminds me of what happens should we live our lives in debt and never get ahead and we DO live to see retirement. Do we want to retire, or work every day we can just trying to stay afloat. I think we have managed to balance it out.
Our goal is to buy a house in Florida. However, we want this before we retire. We save for retirement now, but we also live in the moment. We have a great house, nice cars, travel whenever we can, own a Disney timeshare, and have SU tickets (fully aware this can change with kids.) My mom died at 46, and I don't want to get to that age and have not truly lived life.

You guys are DVC? That's how we go to Disney so often Where are your points at?
We hope to do both- live in the moment and plan for the future. I think it's pretty reckless not to save enough for retirement and put that burden onto your kids. I know if we went on a zillion trips as kids but my parents had to come live with me because they spent everything I'd resent that quite a bit...but I also think its such a waste to not experience the things you want to experience. Part of me wants to own a place where it's warm- but part of me wants to spend each winter in a different city ...so I dunno. All I know is that I'm NOT spending winters up here forever. Omg I would shoot myself.
The only thing we've ever talked about is living in a city somewhere. It's so difficult and expensive to live in a big city with kids, but I think it would be really fun to live in Chicago or NYC when we're older and have time to do what we'd like. My parents aren't retired but they live in NYC and they have so much fun just walking around the city.
We haven't really talked retirement, mainly because the only one saving for retirement right now is me. Maybe when DH is employed full time again, we can talk about "our next life" or even "living in the moment". Right now, we just want to get by.
If we ever get the opportunity, we will travel. I'd like to take Ian places, since I never had that opportunity as a kid since my parents were working and struggling financially. I want him to experience different places, and I want to be with him when he does.
i don't anticipate to ever retire- not because i want to work till i die, i just don't think there will be any SS left for us, our 401Ks aren't the healthiest and we don't put anything else aside for retirement, a house and M's education are more important right now.
but if we're dreaming- i'd love to just travel.

This sounds a lot like us
