Baby Names

Middle Name question and wanting opinions.

Have any of you ladies used the same middle name for each child (granted that they were all the same gender...or not if it's a middle name like Jo or Lee or something...)? My grandparents gave all of their daughters the middle name Marie (except for my Aunt Mary...) and then all the eldest daughters of all my aunts and uncles all have the middle name Marie as well.

Would any of you do this? I like two names for when/if I have a son (not pregnant just thinking about names), one is after my FIL (Asa Scott, so our son would be the second) and then I really like the name Michael, but I'd like to use the middle name Scott as well for him too (yes I know who Michael Scott on The Office is; it is just a coincidence/bonus).

Do you ladies think it would be tacky to use the same middle name for two sons? And then if we had a third son, not use Scott for a middle name?

What are your opinions?

Re: Middle Name question and wanting opinions.

  • Love that you said it was a bonus that Michael Scott was a bonus, and I think it's sweet that all your sons would have the same MN, although slightly weird if you got mad and yelled out FN and MN for both.. at the same time.

  • If boy #2 has the same mn as boy #1 then I would say do it also for boy #3.  Otherwise why would you do it for boy 1&2 but not 3.  Obviously if it's a girl then I would not vote for Scott as the mn.  I don't find it weird.

My SIL and her many sisters actually all have the same first name, Marie, but all different middle names.  They go by middle names or nick names.

  • my two brothers have the same middle name, and my sister has the feminine version for her middle name, I was left out :(  but I really like that they all share that.

  • I think that's kind of weird. But then again it's not a tradition in my family. Everyone gets their own middle name.

I agree with the bolded part, I wouldn't want the 3rd boy to feel left out; anyhow, I do find giving all kids the same middle name a little odd but totally not flamable

  • If you do it for #1 and #2, you gotta do it for #3 as well IMO. That said, I do find this tradition a little odd- why wouldn't each child get a name all their own? As brothers, they're already going to share a lot growing up, and I think it would be nice if they each had their own name. However, it's not MY family tradition, and if it's important to you then go for it.
