If you or someone you know has had a biopsy on a breast lump, I'm wondering whether you always have to go back to get the results in person...or if that's only if the results are bad? My aunt had a biopsy last week and they called and want to see her on Thursday for the results, so we're wondering whether that's a bad sign or just standard procedure regardless of the results. TIA!
Re: Question about breast lumps and biopsies:
I had a lump, but never a biopsy done on it, because it is one that comes and goes with the time of month.
When I had my biopsy done on my cervix I was asked to come into the office and that is when they told me that they found pre-cancerous cells there and I would have to have more extensive surgery done.
I hope all is okay.
I've had two and they called me with the results over the phone. I did have to go in for a follow up appointment just to check the wound and they also went over results in person. My doc also told me both times he took the lumps out that he thought they were non-cancerous, but sent them off just to be sure.
The doc may just have patients come in either way to discuss results. I hope everything is ok.
I work at a Dr. office but Dr.'s do things differently so it just depends on your office. At our office most of the results you have to come in and get. But with that being said when things come back cancerous we normally get them in right away. We don't wait a week.
My sister on the other hand has had malignant melanoma twice in the past 5 years. Last year when she found out of the 2nd time, they called her over the phone.
It also depends sometimes on when they had the biopsy. For normal biopsy's it takes a little longer for the Dr. to look at it and want you to come in. For abnormal biopsy's they look at them pretty quickly and call you to come in.
So it just depends on the practice and the Dr. Sorry you guys are having to go through this, I know it sucks to wait. But I have also learned that if you call the Dr. office and just either leave a message for the Dr. or talk to one of the nurses and have your aunt tell them that she's a little scared about it and see if she can come in earlier or get some kind of info over the phone. A lot of times our pt.'s do this and we get them in sooner or the Dr. will call them and talk about it.
