gee, thanks for my reality check. really, how would my child ever grow up and be successful? I guess with a name like Jax, he'll have to rely on his morals and values and my parenting skills to help him lead a successful life.
Guess I'm in the minority because I don't mind Jake and Jax in the same family. Yes, they are similar but in my years of teaching I've seen a ton of kids in the same family with similar sounding names. You'll probably always be calling them by the wrong name though
I suppose you could go with Johnathan as a first name since Jack is often a nn for Johnathan. Jax is kind of a stretch but it could work. I think Jackson is your best bet though.
Jax and Jake are too similar. I would start over. But if you must, Jackson with the nn Jax or even John with the nn Jax would get my vote. "xx" looks silly and porn-ish.
As for the "shame on you" for judging a professional by their name, I think you need to get with reality. People make snap judgements by names all the time. It just is what it is. In a perfect world would this happen? Maybe not. But we live in a world where we have to prove ourself on paper all the time.
Watch this for an example of how this happens. While this clip discusses "African American" names vs. "white" names, the book discusses spellings and names that look less sophisticated. Jaxx doesn't look sophisticated, so whether you personally approve or not, his prospects won't be as bright (all other things being equal) than a John or a Jacob. It is just pure economics and fact. Whether it is "right" is moot. So a Dr. Jaxx or a lawyer named Jaxx would likely have a disadvantage built in. Sad but true.

Now you're just being silly...no one said your child won't be succesful. People will judge on a name...social psych 101, like it or not. You just need to consider that reality, which it seems that you haven't. This board is to help you do just that!
sorry im so defensive i just wanted answers to the questions i asked about. I specifically said i wasnt interested in whether or not jax is hated or loved. I get so tired of seeing so many negative remarks to many posts, not just this one. If someone says they are "set" on a name, there is no need to slander it, and if you must, all you have to say is, its nms. and the point is across. no harm no foul. I feel like this is just a forum for people to be mean to perfect strangers and get away with it.
My questions I needed help with were:
1. Do you prefer Jax or Jaxx? (I prefer Jax, but came across Jaxx and was interested in the thoughts)
2. Is Jax to similar to my Jake?
3. What are some fn for Jax, aside from Jackson, which we are already considering?
4. Some suggestions for a girls name list because we have none.
If you're going with Jax(x) - I prefer it with one X because I don't think the 2nd X adds anything to the pronunciation. It's just extra...
As for the Jake and Jax being similar - I don't think they're the rhyme-y the way some names are...If Jacob is going by Jake it might just make it difficult for you as a sort of tongue twister. Also I think sometimes other people may think you're referring to the same child if they don't know. Like is Jake also Jax...?
As for the relation to success. Puh leeze - The President of the United States is Barack Obama. Is that the same as Michael Smith? I don't think so and millions elected him.

But there is a difference between cultural/ethnic names and silly made up misspelled names. I think that's the difference here.

Oh so if I didn't look "ethnic" but had a weird name...people would use
me as their dr if they could pinpoint whether I was named that because
it was a family name or had something to do with my heritage? Because
that would be an appropriate thing to ask...Sorry I just think that if
this is the way it is for a lot of people, it's in very very different areas than those that I travel because name bigots don't exist where I'm from.

No, I'm just saying that the general population would understand that "Barack Obama" has ethnic roots, whereas "Jaxx" was just someone trying to be "creative."

I do understand what you're saying, but I know that can't be what everyone is saying because I've read dozens of posts about various other names where people say that name is only ok if it's family / heritage etc. What does that even mean? They're going to ask everyone they meet in life to clarify why they have that name and then decide whether they are ok with their name? So silly...

I think it's just more of an "on-paper" thing. This is just a general example..say someone was looking for a doctor, and they came across a few doctors in their search with the exact same history and ratings and acclaim and experience; they would probably choose the one named "Miguel" over the one named "Jaxx" or "Jezzye." It's just how it is.
Someone's name on paper is often their first impression, and I know for me--I wouldn't blink twice at an "ethnic" name. You don't have to ask someone if their name is ethnic, you can usually tell just by seeing/hearing it. But if the person's name is "Trixxie," which obviously isn't a cultural thing--just a bad choice thing, I'd wonder how I'd take that person seriously. It may not be totally correct, but people judge in this world and that's not going to change. A lot of people's sentiment on here is--why give your child a name that is going to look silly to other people and put them at a disadvantage as an adult.
OP, keep in mind that while you may call him Jax, unless you enunciate clearly (as does everyone else who says his name) people won't know if you are saying Jax or Jack. And Jack is way too close to Jake, in my opinion. I think it is wise to consider not just how it will look on paper, but how people will say it and how people will hear it.
And sorry of this offends you, but Jaxx is ridiculous as xx does not appear anywhere in the English language. Giving him the xx will make people hiss at the end of his name, like Jacksssssss.
I cannot think of any other FNs that Jax would be a good nickname for.
Max would be a great alternative. Similar to the style you like, but a very different name.

Yes, Jake and Jax are too similar. "Jaxx" looks ridiculous, unless they grow up to be a rapper. One "x" gets the point across.
Also, I find Jake a strange NN for Jacob. Of course, it "fits" but in my mind, such a short name doesn't really call for a NN IMO. I know, its not the point of this post, but I needed to get that out.
Jake and Jax are too close, IMO, and I don't know anything other than Jackson that it could be short for. I'd pick something else, but if you use it, it definitely should not be Jaxx.
If you're going with Jax(x) - I prefer it with one X because I don't think the 2nd X adds anything to the pronunciation. It's just extra...

Oh FFS. Seriously? If your aunt smokes a pack of cigarettes a day and doesn't get cancer does it mean that cigarettes no longer cause cancer? Because, like, anecdotal people that defy the studies prove them wrong.
OF COURSE there will be very very successful people with crazy names and a lot of guys named Michael James Jones living on their parent's couch at 30. Anecdotes happen. But having a President named Barack Obama does NOT mean that "puh-leeze, those studies are crap" any more than a smoker who doesn't get cancer proves they cigs are healthy.
OP, nobody was rude to you. These studies (did you even watch the link I posted) are based in reality. Being offended by research is silly. People in previous posts were saying "ethnic" names get a pass. I disagree. Unfortunately, ethnic names also have more trouble. If you want to name him Jaxx - own it. Know that you are giving him a name that might pose some challenges. But to get all ticked off and give immature responses like "oh shucks, I guess I will actually have to parent" make you look uneducated and unable to accept even the most factual of criticisms. This board is not to blow sunshine with the occasional "nms" thrown in. MANY of us that post here put our necks out when we were pregnant and asked for 100% honesty. I personally was thankful for it.

watch it sweet pea, you may want to have another cosmo, your self righteousness is showing.
and as far as being uneducated, I have 2 degrees from an accredited university. One in education and one in psychology. I have watched your little study before. Hooray for you because you know how to google. I dont need research to help me decide whether or not I like a name. I already like the name. But you dont have to like it, or agree with it. I didn't ask for sunshine, but I sure didn't ask for rain. I asked for simple answers to simple questions.
@awylie4408, in my opinion you are just being rude and only want to hear what you think is right. It's called grow up and get a life because this is the world and it sure aint gonna change to be what is right in your eyes. You posted on this board asking for people's opinions on the name Jax. People are giving you their honest opinions on the name Jax. If you don't like it then get a clue and don't ask for people's advice of you don't wanna hear it.

Hrmmm...hypocrite much?! Seriously, now you're just being a b!tch.
This board is just a small sampling of the types of judgement your son will get with a name like Jaxx.
Also, it appears that you really have a lack of a sense of reality for someone with a psych degree. One would think that you'd be aware of the way people judge others automatically (whether you like it or not). It's part of life and your name choice is bad no matter how you attempt to spin it. Regardless of your ability to parent, your child will still have a stupid name that people will judge. Get over the fact that people think it sucks.
