I have been trying to maintain my calm and not let it get to me. I should have known this would happen but things have been going smooth lately so I didn't really expect it.
I think the frustration here isn't that he'll get out of paying or that the amount will change. Just that wage garnishment makes the process easier and less of a headache to deal with for the payee. OP, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

Coming from experience wage garnishment is SO much easier and SO much less complicated than having BD pay directly to the state.
BD decided 2 weeks before he received his financial paperwork to quit his job without reason, to try and get out of paying so much each month based on his wages (he was making 55k/year at that job) - it backfired and the magistrate based his ordered amount on his experience + jobs in his area that he's qualified for.
He still refuses to work (because he knows the state with garnish 60% of each paycheck) and him paying himself is the only way that he can control me.

My ex likes to do that. Then for awhile he was collectiong unemployment, which was garnished for me. Then when unemployment ran out, he started working at a bar, getting paid under the table, so no more payments for me! The only good news is, when/if he gets a tax refund, the government will likely intercept it and send it to you for whatever he owes. Not that it helps you with the day to day, but it can be a nice little yearly allowance!
The thing is he was already "paying" the minimum amount of child support based on minimum wage in Missouri. He is already 3 months past due (hasn't paid since the court order took effect in October). So the state was going to take the money since he wasn't paying it, and then he quits his job. So yes he will still be required to pay me $xxx per month, but he is going to continue not paying because he can get away with it.
ETA: I will call family services Monday to let them know and see what action will be taken next.
I feel for you lady. My ex quit his job when he found out how much child support he was ordered to pay. Now I'm supposed to be getting 1/2 of the original amount. Haven't seen a dime yet. The judge is giving him 6 weeks to get a job, which won't happen because he doesn't want to have to pay me more $$$$. So frustrating. These jerks want to see their kids, but they don't want to help support them!

I hear your pain. My xh is so far behind! He isn't even ordered to pay that much which makes it that much more sad...I've recieved 7 wage garnishments from the two whole jobs that he's had in the past 3 years. Yup.
Also, the state took him to court 2 years ago for contempt for non payment and he (surprise!) wasn't working and they didn't change the amount at all. They ordered him to get on unemployment, which he didn't. He got a bench warrant for not showing up to court. Then he ran. Then the warrant EXPIRED (I know!!!!) and he came back.
Now our case is up for the prosecuting attny to hopefully accept again for contempt. Unfortunately my CS officer said they may not take it because of what happened last time...being that they put in the time and work and money and he never paid anyways. UGH! Way to let him keep getting away with it Grrrr!
Sorry, I know the feeling. ex-hubby (yay, finally!) went out on a leave of absence when he found out he was going to be garnished and to reduce his income to so he wouldn't have to pay as much CS. He still ended up having to pay the back support just at lower amount. Still haven't seen a dime...he's been back to work for a few weeks.
What I don't get is why they don't understand that this money is to TAKE CARE OF THEIR KIDS?!?!?! WTF.
