I've heard it used on both boys and girls as well as dogs. However, I am not a fan of this name. Place names for girls (not a fan for boys either though) always make me think of porn...for example "One Night in London." I wouldn't do that to my daughter...adolescent boys will have a field day.
I automatically think of London from the Disney show "The Suite Life of Zach and Cody". She's supposed to be like "Paris Hilton". But then again, London is a place and I really don't see it as a person's name.
I think place names are a little pretentious for babies, but it's not awful. There's a toddler aged London on my street and they call her Luddie which I think is darling.

This exactly! All I can think of is London Tipton. "Yay me!"
I'm not a fan of place names either. If it's a place of great significance to you then I think it's okay as a MN only.
I have heard it for both but it sounds masculine to me.
"Normal day, let me be aware of the treasured day you are. Let me learn from you, love you, bless you before you depart...let me hold you while I may."
My daughter went to preschool with a girl London last year.
However, (and I know this is an entirely unsolicited opinion but I would feel remiss if I didn't share with you my very strong and honest thought), whenever I hear such a blatant location name; my first thought is always, oh man. . . I hope that's not an homage to some vacation conception action. . . .
Not a fan for either gender. If I really make my mind stretch, in Greek mythology there was a Paris, supposedly how we got the city. So, if you must pick a location name I tend to think of them as masculine. I guess my exception is Savannah is feminine.
I think it's used more for girls now, and it seems feminine to me. It ranked 108th in popularity for girl names and 508th for boy names in 2010. However, I don't much care for it in either case.
One of my high school friends named her daughter Londyn. It's definitely nms since I'm not a huge fan of place names, but it's not a terrible name. And I've never considered it a boy's name either.
I like this name, but the first thing that comes to mind when I think of it is ghosts and hauntings (the UK is supposed to be the most haunted country in Europe), and then I can't help but think of all the people who died there b/c of disease and religious persecution and stuff.
If it weren't for its reputation and history, I would consider using it.
Sorry, this. I'm not a huge fan of place names to begin with but this one really is NMS. The only one I dislike even more, I think, is Brooklyn. If you have your heart set on it, then yes, it CAN be used for either sex... but IMHO it shouldn't be used for either....
