Not rolling anymore?

DD has rolled back to front and front to back.  Now she refuses to roll front to back.  She still HATES tummy time, she makes it sound like I'm torturing her, but she refuses to even try to roll over anymore.  She just lays there and screams.  She just turned 8 months old.  Is this normal?  She's no where near crawling, as she is refusing to do anything but scream when on her belly :(

Re: Not rolling anymore?

  • I am not sure really on what to do. But have you tried laying on the floor with LO? It seems to my thmy 8 mo babies should be at least scooting around on the floor.

  • While this is something I would mention to your babies doctor I would like to mention that I had a friend whose daughter acted the same way....she just cried on her belly (not sure why).  Is your LO sitting well?  My friends DD sat well and started scooting on her bum around 9.5 months and is now walking :)  Also you can show LO how to roll by pulling one arm forward and towards your opposite shoulder.

  • That's the weird thing to me.  She sits really well and can stand with minimal support.  She's not pulling herself into either of these positions yet, but I think she's still a little on the young side for that.  She's 8 months on Monday, but was a month early too, so I don't know if that makes a difference.  When she figured out how to roll belly to back (at about six months) she did it all the time.  It's been in the past two weeks I've noticed her not doing it anymore.  I'm just not sure if maybe she's putting all of her concentration into learning new things or if I should be worried about a developmental lag.

  • My DS is doing the same thing. He has rolled over both ways but in the last 2-3 weeks whenever he is put on his tummy he just cries and won't roll over. He has been sitting on his own since 5 months and can now pull himself up to his knees and even his feet a few times. I am going to bring it up to my doctor but I am thinking they are just concentrating on learning new things.

  • Sometimes once they've mastered a skill they move on to the next thing for a while.  DD learned to raspberry and was doing it all the time, then she figured out how to click her tongue and totally forgot about raspberrying for a while.  Now she just goes about her play and throws in a raspberry here and a tongue click there.

My first hated tummy time and barely rolled until she could walk, but she could sit at 5 months and bim scooted around by 7 months.  She has always had a very sensitive tummy and still doesn't like lying on her belly at 3.5 years.
