Success after IF

When to get fitted for first shoes?

Henry is cruising the furniture a bit. Is it time to get fitted, or is it too soon?

Re: When to get fitted for first shoes?

  • As they start to walk, their feet start to spread so you probably have some time yet.

For DS, we had some cute shoes for outfits but didnt buy him everyday shoes until he was going to be walking outside (when we went to Disney when he was 15 months old).

DD is standing on her own now and starting to take her first steps (although most are still falling forward at this point) and we'll probably get her some shoes before her first birthday since we're having it at a childrens museum and I'm pretty sure she'll be full on walking by then.

It really doesnt take too long to go from taking a few steps to toddling all around.  So enjoy the cute finger walking and cruising!

  • You can get him fitted, but they suggest keeping babies in soft soled shoes or socks with anti-slip soles until walking steadily on their own.

  • We took Brady to Stride Rite at 10 months to get fitted. He had been walking for a month and a half by that point. I would wait a bit. It's better for them to learn to walk barefoot. Go Henry! :)

  • I have had many people tell me to wait until they walked to get shoes. Both of my kiddos were late walkers and shoes actually helped them to learn to walk.
  • All my kids were in PT when they started walking and we also say an orthopedist, they all said the same thing they don't need shoes when they are inside. They stressed they are only to protect their feet from surfaces and cold. They recommend soft flexible soles. They said they do not need the ankle support that they once recommend. They said not to spend a lot on the shoes because they don't need them!

  • DS started walking at 10 months but we didn't get him fitted for shoes until 13 months.

  • I took Reese to get fitted and she was an early walker, but they don't make early walker shoes in a size 2, so I just got her cute shoes elsewhere (converse, toms) and she walks just fine in them, so I'm done with the special shoes thing :)

Ryan has a really wide foot, so stride rite worked for him when I got him fitted.

I honestly have been putting some form of shoe on their feet since they were 7/8 months old. But from what I understand, you don't need to do it until their feet are on the ground regularly. So if he's cruising, you may want to get him a pair of prewalkers just to protect his feet (i.e. if you're at a mommy and me/playgroup/out and about) and then get him fitted for sneaks when he's fully walking.

Prewalkers (things like Robeez) are usually pretty cheap $25, so they're a good interim shoe :) And the Street Shoez are adorbs.

  • We did this two weeks ago and Sam is just starting to pull and cruise a little.  His daycare has a shoe rule once they are pulling up regularly (for safety).  We got the Stride Rite Early Walkers, they are a soft rubber sole, so still pretty flexible.

The people at the store were very helpful I thought.

This is what I've always heard -- unassisted walking (i.e., not cruising or using a push toy or holding your hands) is when they need shoes.
