Excessive Daytime Urination? My 4.5 yo DS appears to have it. It's 9:09 am, and I think he has been potty at least 7 times in the last 1.5 hours.
At school yesterday - he went 24 times in 8 hours. (that doesn't include the times he asked to go and did not go).
Anybody ever deal with this?
Re: Anyone ever deal with Pollakiuria?
Yes, and it is very difficult. And I notice it is coming up more frequently on the boards of late! We successfully dealt with it in my now 7yo DD, the worst of it when she was around 4-5 after many months. You can google all kinds of articles about it. What worked for us- and was reinforced by our pediatrician- was to mostly 'ignore' and minimize it as much as possible. The more you make an issue of it, discuss it, etc. the more they will focus on it.
Our most difficult time was at bedtime, where my DD would get up about every other minute to go to the bathroom. Our solution was very labor intensive, but it eventually worked. I told her that her body was tricking her into thinking it had to go potty all the time, and that I wanted her to let mommy worry about it, so she could relax. So I'd sit in my office outside of her room and tell her when it was time to go pee. At first I'd do it every other minute, just like she had been, to build the trust that I was going to follow through. Then I'd make her wait a little longer, each time. The goal was to wait long enough so that she'd fall asleep as I knew she was tired. I would just reassure her, and remind her over & over that mommy was going to worry about it for her.
After a couple of months (seriously) we got to the point where she was doing so well I told her that I would do "surprise" minutes- where I would come in randomly. I'd make sure I went in at least once when she was awake, but I'd try to make it long enough so she'd fall asleep.
Her issues still crop up sometimes when she's stressed about something in her life - the new school year starting usually brings it up a bit. But with a LOT of patience (something I don't normally have a lot of), we were able to work through it successfully. Since it is a benign condition, I didn't feel (nor did my pedi) that any medication would be beneficial- it just took time.
