pedi in the OR for c/s?

I was talking with a friend of mine today re: her recent RCS and how it all went down and she mentioned that her DS's pediatrician was in the OR for the c/s. I asked her if this was a normal thing and she wasn't sure. Her DS was born at 35weeks 5 days and had some breathing difficulty so I was thinking it could possibly be because of that? When I had my c/s it seems like there were a million people in the room but I don't remember a pedi being one of them. It was all so hectic I could be mistaken. Just wondering if anyone knew if this was normal or not? I love DD's pedi but I don't know how I feel about him seeing me like that. Of corse, it's not the most important thing in the world but it would make me feel a little akward.

Re: pedi in the OR for c/s?

  • My hospital has the NICU team on call for all c/s and all births before 37 weeks. For multiples births, they are in the OR. DD was both of these so the NICU team was there - DD checked out fine, they left and she came with us to recovery.

  • I had a full term c/s (39w2d) for breech positioning and there was no Pedi in the room. I believe there was a pediatric nurse there to assess the baby. Perhaps they only have a Pedi if they foresee potential problems with the baby?

  • I know DD's pediatrician wasn't in the OR for my c/s.  We had my OB, another surgeon who was on staff at the hospital, the regular OR staff and someone from the NICU because DD had expelled the miconium in utero. No way would I want the pediatrician in there with us, and I've never heard of that before.

  • I remember my OB yelling at the nurse to make sure there was a pedi in the room as they were running down the hall with me.   She said something to the effect I don't want to hear the pedi is on her way.   I want to hear she is in there now.   We can't start without her.

It wasn't someone from the pedi practice we go to.   It was an on-call dr.   Thank god she was there.   DS was born not breathing due to cord issues.

  • I delivered early, and yes, we had a pedi there. He stayed to the side until she baby was born, and immediatly took the baby from the OB.

We did not choose to use or normal pedi practice but a hospital NICU pedi, mostly because they know how to handle just born babies the best.

  • Both my kids were born full term and there was no pedi present. I'm guessing it's only in cases where a child is born premature or they suspect some potential issue at birth.

  • My hospital's policy is that a NICU doctor and nurse are present for all c-sections.  I remember seeing them in the OR when I had my older son.  And with my younger son, I remember the team saying the baby was healthy and then walking out of the OR.
  • There was a pedi in the OR for my c/s.  I believe she was the on call pedi for the maternity ward.  She was at the side until DS was born, checked him out and I remember hearing her say, "he's healthy, I'm out of here" and then she left.  She was the same pedi that came and checked him the following 2 days we were in the hospital.  I was an unplanned c/s at 41 weeks...though there was meconium in my water and I was GBS+, so not sure if those were contributing factors or not?

  • Are you sure you don't mean a NICU doc (doctor that went through pediatrics residency (3 years) and then neonate fellowship (3 years on top of that)?  Peds residents all have to do several NICU rotations, so it may have been a peds resident on call during his/her NICU rotation.  A general pediatrician would be close to worthless if something was actually going wrong at birth, and I say this as a wife of a really wonderful pediatrican -- that NICU fellowship is intensive for a reason! They know their stuff!!  I guess this may be completely different if your hospital didn't have a NICU and peds docs were the only ones available.

  • With my first we had a gazillion people in there since he was so early, but there was no pedi in there. With Lucas, there was still no pedi, but I asked a couple of Aidan's NICU nurses to be in there and my grief counselor.

  • The on call pedi was in the OR for my unplanned c/s. It is standard procedure.

  • we had a pedi in there because there was meconium in the water but it wasn't her regular dr, just the one that was on duty at the hospital. they were standing off to the side until she was born and then just looked her over so it wasn't like they were all up in my biz-nas.
  • We had a NICU team in the OR when DD was born because she was early and there were some suspected issues. She turned out just fine :)

  • I used the hospital's pedi because the group I used was in a different hospital network from. I delivered LO just hours shy of him hitting the 37 week mark, but my situation was different, since he was frank breech with low fluid (his movement slowed dramatically which was why I had him at that point).

The pedi was in attendance in the OR (I remember because I saw the bill a month later with an OR charge) because I am figuring that they LO may have complications, but he didn't. Small, but scored 9/9 on his APGAR. I am not aware if that is standard practice having a pedi attending a c-section. I would figure that it's based on the circumstances and if is hospital policy.

  • With my first son the NICU was in the OR b/c my water broke with meconium in it. They had to check out DS to make sure he didn't breath any of it in. With DS2, I had a planned c/s at 39w3d and there wasn't any nicu or pedi in the OR.

  • I had a routine c-section after a failed induction and our pedi assisted in the delivery
ETA: I was 41 weeks with no complications.  My family doctor is also DDs pedi

This. In the OR during mine was: my OB, an assisting surgeon, an assisting nurse from labor/delivery, baby nurse, and anesthesiologist.

  • I had a full- term, scheduled, C-section with DD because she was breech. Her pediatrician was there. I did not realize it until afterwards when I was looking through pics DH had taken. I never really thought anything about it though.

  • I had one of the hospital's NICU neonatologists at mine, but that was because DD was a preemie. I'm guessing they have them when an issue is suspected or known. I certainly wouldn't worry about your pedi coming to your c/s. I personally have never heard of that before.

  • My son was born @ 37 1/2 weeks.  Our pedi we had chosen was there and  continued to come to the hospital to check on him daily.  It seemed pretty normal for our hospital.
