How many of you were induced and ended up with a c-section? Is this pretty common?
One of my best friends was induced on Monday and ended up with an emergency c-section on Tuesday.
Another of my best friends was induced yesterday and was taken in for an emergency c-section about an hour ago. Still waiting anxiously to hear the news.
So scary! Makes me so thankful I went into labor on my own both times.

TTC#2=July 2011: Surprise BFP: Chemical Pregnancy
My first came on her own at 37 weeks. She was a fast, easy delivery. Made it to the hospital not even in actual pain and was already 7cm - she came 3hrs later. I went through with my no epi plan and everything!
#2 was diff. We figured since #1 had done so well I would follow around the same path with this one but nope. At 39+1 wks we induced due to my GD and some hypertension issues. After 8hrs on pit I had stalled out at 8cm and DD hadn't even come down. OB allowed me to try to push her down but she wouldn't budge and her heartrate flucuated a bit so we went in for c-sec. I hadn't gotten an epi so they just put in a quick spinal and then she was out!
I was fine with how it worked out. I knew it was best for her to get outta there. Plus, I had already done a vaginal birth before. I think it's harder on some people if they never get to experience that. They feel cheated.
This baby will be a repeat c-sec. One because my clinic doesn't allow VBAC and two because I am so close to when I just gave birth.

My water broke with my first, but I didn't go into labor. Was on pitocin for 14 hours before I got to 10cm. Pushed for 4 hours and ended up with a C/S 24 hours after my water broke.
With my second I wanted to try for vbac, but only if labor started on its own. Labored at home for 26 hours then after getting my epi around 28 hours in I stopped progressing at 7 1/2cm. Had a low dose of pitocin and got to 10cm about 3 hours later. Pushed for 1 hour and he was born. At one point around 9cm I was in so much pain even with the epi I told them to do a c/s. thank god my nurse called for a stronger epi instead of listening to me demand a c/s.
I'm pretty interested in natural childbirth & birth in general & have done lots of reading about in in the last few years. The short answer is, yes, you are about 50% more likely to end up with a c-section if you are induced. The more interventions, the higher likelihood of csection.
The national csection rate is abysmal at over 32% and some hospitals top 40%. More than 1 in 3 women are not birthing vaginally. That is crazy to me.
I thank my lucky stars that I had a MW attend both my births. I know with near 100% certainty that Eliza would have ended in a csection with an OB - I was 41w and my water broke, but labor was irregular for a full 24hrs. I ended up needing some pitocin to help things along and it still took me another 12hrs to deliver her and I pushed for almost 3hrs. An OB would never have let me go so long with my kwater broke, slow progress, long pushing etc...my MW monitored me and baby closely and there was never at sign of distress, she was just posterior.
Now before anyone jumps on me. I know there are circumstances where csections and inductions are medically necessary and I have zero issue with that, obviously. Csections save lives of moms and babies every single day. I do not dispute that fact. Thank goodness for them. I do take issue with the casual attitudes some seem to have regarding elective inductions and csections for no medical reason.
Ill step off my soapbox now...just something I have strong opinions on

I was induced at 41 wk 2d and had a fairly normal labor and was able to push for 6 hrs. It wasn't known at the time that ds had a giant head and was sunny side up. So because of that I had to have a csection. But we're certain if he had a smaller head he would have come out on his own.
That being said my obs & mds are pushing for a repeat cesection which I am not pleased w/. I've pretty much told them that that will be a last resort. I can labor and push just fine and this baby might have a smaller head. At least Im hoping he does!

when you ask that way you'll likely get more "induced and had a c/s" answers, which isn't accurate % wise.
i was induced, and had a vaginal birth - no problem.... it took a long time for me to start pushing... the only issues i had were b/c he was coming out crooked and had a huge head- nothing to do with the induction.
and for what it's worth- i LOVED my c/s with the twins... so much easier to recover from than my vag birth with 4th degree tear!
I was induced at 38 weeks electively. I was 3cm and 80%. As a l&d nurse at the time I had lots of fears, some more rational than others, a c/s wasn't a fear. I felt confident that if I ended up with a c/s theni would have needed one regardless.
If your cervix is favorable (already dilated and effaced some) then your chance of a vaginal delivery is pretty good, (if you're capable of delivering vaginally). Meaning, if you got a c/s after being induced you may very well have needed a c/s no matter what.
If you aren't favorable and go for an induction (like maybe you are past your due dye or something), then end up with a c/s then it probably wasn't going to happen vaginally, there's a reason that the baby never engaged and made some cervical change.
When they induce someone for a medical reason that isn't favorable but for either mom or baby's health it's time for the baby to be born, there may be a small percentage of mom's that may have done it vaginally but got a c/s.
I think a lot of people think induction caused the c/s, and that may be the case some of the time. But the way I look at it is, why was there a need for induction? Why didn't they labor on their own? More than likely the reason they didn't labor on their own is the reason for c/s not the actual induction. But it does vary case by case.

I was induced and had a c-section after failure to progress. I didn't get past 3 cm dilated. It wasn't an emergencu c-section though. The Dr. came in and said I don't think you'r going to progress....do you want to try another 8 hours or go in for a c-section. I opted for the c-section at that point.
I will note that my c-section recovery was awesome. I will definitely be going in for c-section for any future pregnancies as opposed to trying for a VBAC.
