Babies who didn't like purees

So A is just not into purees.  I thought that he was getting there, but not so much.  He will eat tastes of table food, that is softened, etc.  (mashed potatoes, finely shredded cheese) and he manages them pretty well.  What did you do, just give tastes and then when they got teeth, start offering more?  I think that it is a texture thing, as I have tried Earth's Best and Plum Organics, and cereal...no go on really anything.

Re: Babies who didn't like purees

  • We did a lot of baby led weaning. I was really not into the idea of it at first (I was afraid she would choke, but she was fine), but P was not into the baby food either and she really enjoyed feeding herself. I just made sure that everything she had was cut up really small so she could gum it.

  • Mia never liked them either!  Funny because Owen is getting feeding therapy because he still eats them.....  Anyway, we just did small/soft foods LONG before she had teeth.  She liked the mesh feeder, so that worked too.  It was hard for me to change my mentality about the purees, but she did great.   She ended up eating almost everything without (or without many) teeth . Good luck!

  • Brianna didn't like purees.  So I just followed her lead.  She did really well with soft whole foods, like a whole banana, just handed it to her in her high chair and let her go to town!  We never had any issues and she is a great eater, her favorite foods are actually green beans, broccoli, salad and scallops.  So it didn't cause her not to like a variety of foods or anything.  Google baby led weaning and you will find a ton of information on it.
  • We too did baby led weaning.  It made sense to me, as I didn't have to make or buy an extra food - DD just ate the same food as me.  Some of the early things she loved were green beans (easy to hold and chew), tofu, polenta, veggie patties, cheese, and fruits.

  • While I don't "get" BLW (why the rush to push eating adult table food), if they won't eat purees I would either wait a bit and try again or go the BLW route.

FWIW, they don't need teeth to eat. You only use your front teeth to bite things into smaller pieces. If you offer them small pieces they will use their hard gums to mash. If one waited until a child had molars to chew they wouldn't be eating solid food until after 1 year!
