Anyone give their kid Ensure?

My LO has been refusing to eat lately, just wants to snack, but really only wants fruit. He's been extremely crabby and majorly bipolar, and I'm worried that it's cause he's hungry since he doesn't want to eat anything of substance. I thought about trying to get him to drink some ensure, or some kind of meal replacement drink. No idea if he would or not, but I'm really starting to worry that his horrible mood is from being hungry, but yet refusing to eat. Sigh...

Re: Anyone give their kid Ensure?

  • I wouldn't worry too much about what he's eating unless your pediatrician is worried or he's having a weight gain problem.  The meal replacement shakes are pretty sweet and he might end up preferring those over food if he's already being picky.  I would talk to the pediatrician before using meal replacements of any kid.  Real food is always preferable unless there is a problem.  I've found that the super picky, no eating phases rarely last long enough to warrant serious worry.

  • My DS  gets 1 ensure a day. He actually eats well, but the ensure helps with his constipation. My DD used to drink 1-2 ensures a day because she was underweight. She gained 6lbs in the last year, so we don't really give her any now. She drinks whole milk.

  • If you child is having a problem and the pediatrician says that a product like this is a necessary evil for a short time, then you have to do what you have to do. But if you just want your child ot have more calories, consider the source of the calories, as they are building blocks for your childs organs, bones, muscles, etc. What you put in becomes a part of your child, ingredients are important. Ensure is made of :

Water, sugar (sucrose), corn syrup, maltodextrin (corn), calcium caseinate, high-oleic safflower oil, canola oil, soy protein isolate, whey protein concentrate, corn oil, calcium phosphate tribasic, potassium citrate, magnesium phosphate dibasic, natural and artificial flavor, soy lecithin, sodium citrate, magnesium chloride, salt (sodium chloride), carrageenan, choline chloride, potassium chloride, ascorbic acid, ferrous sulfate, alpha-tocopheryl acetate, zinc sulfate, niacinamide, calcium pantothenate, manganese sulfate, cupric sulfate, vitamin A palmitate, thiamine chloride hydrochloride, pyridoxine hydrochloride, riboflavin, folic acid, chromium chloride, biotin, sodium molybdate, sodium selenate, potassium iodide, phylloquinone, vitamin D3 and cyanocobalamin.

You could easily make your child an organic smoothie with yogurt, fruit, and organic protein powder. A child doesnt need to grow on chemical compounds created to resemble whole foods.

  • One of my friends has a DD who is a horrendous eater.  Her pedi told her to only offer Pediasure at the end of the day if her DD  had a really bad eating day, never in the middle of the day or in place of meals because it is so filling it will curb her appetite and keep her from being hungry for "real" food.

Yeah, you're coming off a little preachy here. My dd has been struggling with FTT since 4 months. If it weren't for these "chemical compounds" she'd have a feeding tube. So before you go sticking your nose up to what I'm dumping down my kid's throat, you should consider the fact that these extra calories are keeping her from unnecessary medical procedures which are far worse than the components of her Pediasure!

I dont believe in "holy". Nor do I think a monarchial society is good. I do however believe in a whole healthy diet and even if my pediatrician recommended ensure, I would find a wholer, oraganic substitute. Im too lazy too do a little research for the health of my children.
