Diaper rash despite using cream every diaper change

Ever since DD was born we've used either petroleum jelly (hospital), A&D or Desitin at each diaper change.  Despite this, DD has proceeded to get a bad diaper rash.  We gave her a bath this morning and I'm going to try to let her go without a diaper for part of the day, as I've found with DS air drying is the best treatment.  However, over the course of 2 hours DD must have peed or pooped at least 10 times.  I can't keep this up all day every day.  Are there any better creams or ointments out there?   She does have a little bit of thrush so it could be a yeasty rash.  I am going to call the pedi now to get some Magic Butt Cream.  Any other ideas for healing/prevention in the future?

Re: Diaper rash despite using cream every diaper change

  • My pediatrician recommended using vaseline, we use it every other change and it seems to have worked for us.

Not to be dumb... but where do you put the vaseline (or ointment) on her but or the edges where the diaper is?

  • Actually, my kids all got diaper rashes when I used the cream at every diaper change. When I just use a diaper, they tend to get diaper rashes less. In other words, I use to cream to treat rashes, not to prevent them, it seems to get much better.

  • If it truly is a diaper rash and not thrush I have a solution that my pedi has had me doing on my DD that works wonders. She has severe allergies so I am very limited in what I can use. Do not use wipes, use warm water and a soft washcloth to clean her only. The wipes will burn her and break that skin down. Always dry the skin well with a dry cloth or by air. Put Maxium Strength Desitin (purple tube) all over the area with the rash, then put plain corn startch on the cream until it is completely covered, it creates almost a cast. This will protect the skin thoroughly and allow it to heal, I have seen results overnight. When you have to clean her use the warm water again but only the soiled area. The cream is cement so it won't come off with the cleaning wich is ok. Just make sure to dry it completely before reapplying the cream and corn starch back on. I now only need to do this at night before bed to protect her. During the day I only have to us corn starch and it keeps her skin dry preventing the diaper rash. If you aren't making certain that her skin is totally dry before applying the Vaseline you're locking in that moisture which will cause the worst rash. Same thing goes for any anti-diaper rash product containing zinc or protroleum. I have found that wipes no matter free/natural causes her rashes. Good luck!

  • Is it raised bumps or smooth and red?

If raised bumps, it could be yeast and I would use nystatin or I've used monistat on DD1 (use the 7day cream).

If its smooth and red, then I use butt paste and cornstarch powder.  If its bleeding at all, I'll put basitracin (sp?) then butt paste and cornstarch powder.

  • I put the cream all over. In her butt, in her labia (not all the way inside) down her legs.  She is usually squirming so it ends up everywhere anyway

We use soducream  no rashes so far, but she screams in a wet diaper after 30 seconds.

  • My friend who is a pedicatrian in a NICU says you really shouldn't put cream on everytime. We only put it on if he has a huge poop but besides that we just wipe quickly and put a new diaper. My little one has yet to have any diaper rash and it has been over 10 weeks. Good luck!

On her butt, the pedi said that the cream/vaseline should prevent the poop/pee from sticking/touching the skin.

  • If she has thrush, nothing besides nystatin is going to clear it up.

  • My pediatrician recommended balmex at every diaper change. We have been using it since he was 4 days old no redness no issues.
