My best friend is 30w PG today with #2. About 3 weeks ago, she started feeling a lot of pressure, like the baby was really low and almost coming out. They did an internal u/s and her cervix was only a little over 1. She has been on strict at-home bedrest since. She's had he cervic checked each week and it hasn't changed at all. Well, she's been at the hospital all night in labor. When she went in, she was having contractions every 3 to 4 minutes and was dilated 2 cm. They started magnesium and steriod shots. Through the night she's been texting me with updates. Her last one about 2 hours ago was that she hadn't had a strong contraction in over 3 hours, just BH contractions randomly. She is hoping to go home this afternoon but is so worried she'll find herself back at L&D shortly. She begged me to post here and ask - If you got magnesium to stop contractions, how much longer were you PG? TIA!
Re: If you were given magnesium to stop contractions, please come in
I was in the hospital at 28 weeks due to hbp. They had me on the mag for 4 days and then I was released on strict bedrest. My son was born at 34 weeks.
Honestly I think it's different for everyone and you really cannot compare. PP's had a great outcome. Me, not so much. I was admitted to L&D for PTL at 24w4d, put on mag for 24 hours and ended up delivering at 25w2d. I ultimately delivered due to a placental abruption. Whether that had to do with my bulging membranes or contractions, I'm not sure...
ETA: I was already dilated to 2cm though and had a bulging bag when I was admitted. Also, I will be praying for your friend. Hopefully the LO will stay put a little while longer.
and after 82 days in the NICU, our little girl is home!
I got put on mag at 30w4 days and stayed on it for 48 hours. It was an awful experience I stayed inpatient on bedrest for almost 2 weeks after that and ended up delivering at 34w5d for other reasons (cord noted to be wrapped around baby B's head via u/s and baby A was face down into my cervix)
T&P for your friend!
I was admitted to the hospital on bedrest at 26 weeks due to me having no cervix and was 2cm dilated. I had a round of mag for 12hours when I was admitted. I had another round at 30 weeks for contractions and then I delivered at 31 weeks! I hope she is able to get steriod shots. I had 2 rounds of them when I was in the hospital on bedrest and I truly beleived that is what helped my LO!!
I went into the hospital at 24 and 4 with a 1.3 cervix and contractions every 3 mins.
They gave me a bolus of mag 4 grams in 30 mins, then weaned me down. My Dr did something not many Drs will do. But kept me on mag for 4 weeks at 2.5 grams. It wasnt fun but I was able to get to 29 weeks and they released me from the hospital on oral meds. I was desperate to get as far as I could.
I have been out of the hospital for a week now and on oral meds, still pregnant.
If she has any questions feel free to message me. I will pray for her, I know how scary it can be.
I was put on Mag at 30 weeks 6 days. I stayed on for 48 hours so they could give me the betamethasone (steroids for baby's lungs) shots. The contractions broke through the mag at that point and they switched me to Procardia. I was released after 8 days when they realized that they're never going to stop my contractions (they're still every 1-2 minutes with about 5-10 sporadic big contractions a day), but that the Procardia made them weak enough that they're not changing my cervix anymore. I'm now 32 weeks 2 days, and no one expected me to keep lo in this long, so every day he stays in there is a blessing! Just waiting it out at home on bed rest now.
The magnesium was honestly the worst part of the whole experience. It made me crazy! I couldn't control my eyes, couldn't think straight, couldn't put together sentences...but it slowed down my labor enough to get the steroid shots in and keep lo in longer, so it was worth it.
Tell your friend to hang in there! It sucks, but it's temporary
It really varies for everyone. I was 24 weeks and three days and 3 dcm dilated when they did the inital round of mag. They put me on indocin and procardia as well. They gave the steroid shots. I went into labor again at 25 weeks and they started another round of mag and it didn't work, I had Scarlette that night.
Here is hoping your friend keeps the little one in!
