Sippy cup? Water?

I'm in no rush, but would like to get DS using a sippy cup eventually here. I forgot to ask his ped last time, so what do yours say about water (when to give it/how much to give)? I EBF and I hope I don't get flamed for this, but I can't bear to let him "play around" with BM in a sippy cup. I want him drinking every drop! But I also don't want him drinking water if that's not best.

What are you ladies doing?

  • I give like an ounce or two.  If she manages to get any in her mouth she spits it out anyway.

  • My pedi recommended water in between meals. I give him a few oz's in a sippy to practice. He mostly plays with it at this point.

Same. I probably put almost 2oz in his cup but he mainly just plays with it for now. Also, I can totally understand not wanting to put BM in it. I used to practically cry if he spit up after drinking a BM bottle because he "wasted" it. haha

  • DD has a pretty good grasp of the sippy cup already - as far as getting her hands around the handles and putting it in her mouth.  Then she proceeds to dribble it all out down the front of her.  I don't even measure the amount that I put in there as I am sure that the amount that she is drinking is harmless.

  • I fill a sippy cup all the way...she usually only plays with it...but every once in awhile will get some water.  The look on her face when she does is sooo funny!!!  she does not like water! LOL
  • I give them their sippy cup after the rice cereal and they love it!  Hold it, get it in their mouths and sometimes down thier clothes.  Turns out that is the way that my pediatrician says they are going to get their flouride.  I also think theky like tio chew on the mouth part for their teething.

I meant to add this to my reply also - if its nice and cold she chomps down on it!!!

    Ditto all of this.

This. If I hold it for her, she gets a bit of water. If she holds it, she gets nothing. We won't use juice at all until she is a year old and even then, juice will not be the norm. I'm hoping she is a milk and water kid!

Same here...  He gets a sip and then shakes his head and throws the cup down! Then picks it back up and tries again. :-)

  • I asked my pedi on Wed. and she said to practice using a sippy cup w/ water (not BM) since he doesn't actually NEED the water.  No more than 3-4 oz. daily since she doesn't want him filling up on water.  That seems like a lot to me, so I'm going to start him on 1-2 oz. water in a sippy cup.  I bought one, but haven't used it yet.  I'm still trying to figure out the best time of day to have him use the cup.

  • We use the Tommee Tippee ones with the handles. I totally understand not wanting to use BM, so as not to waste it. I put water in it, maybe 1oz or 2. Thankfully, she understands the sippy cup, bc she still refuses a bottle. We introduced it at 4 months bc I was trying to find some way for her to drink expressed BM.
