Austin Babies

First Solids

Hi!  I just moved to Austin from Chicago so have been reading this board to find my way around the Austin mama scene.  You all have been a great source of info for the me past couple of weeks!  So while this is not Austin related I thought I'd try to get your input.

I just started my daughter on solids a couple of weeks ago (she'll be 6 months old tomorrow).  She's had rice cereal and butternut squash.  I want to make some food for future feeding and already I am feeling bored with her options of first foods that are easy to make.

What were your baby's first foods?

Did anyone one use a baby specific processor (Ie  Beba Baby) or did your regular food processor suffice?

What did/do you use for storage of your homemade food?  I have a couple OXO containers for freezing so far...

Also, I recently read an article saying that the whole recommendation of feeding your baby vegetables first (as opposed to fruits) so they don't grow to favor only sweet things later, is a myth...any experience/thoughts on that as well?  We are going to our new pedi tomorrow so I will ask there too but just curious what your experiences have been.

Thanks!!

  • Hi Jill!  Welcome to Austin!

I started my daughter with sweet potato and avocado.  We quickly added bananas, roasted peaches, yogurt, roasted apples, etc.

My pedi told me the fruit before veggies thing was a myth.  However, my LO never liked greens much.  Now the only time she'll really eat greens is when its hidden in a fruit smoothie.

I used a regular food processor (still do- I make her yogurt) and the take-n-toss containers.  I just pour the yogurt right into the container and grab one for daycare every morning.  Prior to that, I used ice cube trays to freeze the food into cubes and then would throw the cubes into gallon bags.
