Breastfeeding

Bottles

I have read to introduce between 4-6. Weeks. Any input? I am a SAHM for now, so I dont need to right away, but I want to be able to spend a fe hours away from him eventually and I don't want him to not take one because I waited too long.

Re: Bottles

  • Due to weight issues we introduced a bottle in the first week (for formula). DS has had no problem switching between the breast and the bottle. And he's now 100% BF.

DW even pumps a bit now, and I do a feeding every so often.

If you've been having problems with latch and feeding in general, then it might be good to wait. But if your LO is having no problems, you can probably introduce that bottle whenever.

One of the LC's at the hospital actually said that "nipple confusion" is somewhat bogus.

  • We will introduce a bottle this weekend. Smile

My LC said after 30 days initially, but then added that it would be fine once breatsfeeding is established and baby doesn't have any latch-problems etc., so we are goign for it a bit sooner. It took him a moment to understand how to use a paci, which I intro'd a couple of days ago, so we'll see how it goes with the bottle. Wink

  • We waited until J was 6-8 weeks old. I had a rough start in the beginning with nursing with latch problems, cracking, breast infection, so I didn't want to give a bottle until I was totally comfortable and everything was smooth with nursing. We did give a paci at 2 weeks.

  • I think we waited until 5-6 weeks.  I went back to work at 8.5 weeks so she needed to take a bottle by then.

We never had success with a pacifier, she just spits it out.

We actually even switched bottles, from the Playtex Ventaire to Avent, and she didn't even notice.
