how do you mix your Formula bottles *clicky

just wondering how you mix your bottles...i was always doing 1 scoop per 2 oz of water(as per instructions on formula container) but then usually i'd add 3 scoops of formula then fill to about 7oz of water just so he'd get a bit more.

i just tried filling it with 7oz of water first and added 3 scoops and stupid me  it filled up to almost 8oz! obviously! (refer to grade 5 science )

so i figured i should fill with water first and then add formula - could be why he's constipated...not getting enough water and his formula is too concentrated??

just wondering if i'm the only one or if this even matters....

  • I'm pretty sure the directions say water first then formula because LO should get Xoz of fluid then you add the powder on top of that. Of course it will be more than the liquid you put in because it's more mass.

  • This!  I know people do formula first but as per the instructions (at least for similac brands) you should absolutely be doing WATER FIRST.... and if you want to do 5, or 7 oz, it is a half scoop extra (eyeballed)... DD gets 5 ounces... PITA

  • 7 oz of water and then 3 scoops of formula is not the right ratio per directions & it does say right in the directions to do the water first.

  • Your method kind of gives me a headache. Just follow the directions FFS.

  • 1 scoop to 2 oz water ALWAYS. Water first, them formula. If you need an odd amount of oz, either mix two bottles and split it (for example, if you need 3 oz bottles, you mix 6 oz and pour half into another bottle) or mix a pitcher and pour it into the bottles, then store in fridge.

Like everyone else said, it's water first for a reason. Just follow the directions on the can.

  • Water first then formula. Why would you do it any other way?

  • I've done it both ways. I use the Target Up & Up brand bottle liners in a large drop in bottle. When I do water first, then formula (for a 6 oz bottle), it is full to the very top of the bottle.

So since it is consistently that way, I put powder in first, then fill with water. Once it's mixed, it is the exact same volume as if I did it the other way around.

I also give LO a sippy cup with about an ounce or two of water (which the pediatrician is TOTALLY cool with). So no matter what, she's getting her fluids.

  • FYI - if you're using drop in liners, you should always measure in a measuring cup first (then it won't really matter which order you do water vs formula).  The liners vary pretty greatly with the markings on the bottles, and even with their own markings on the liner themselves (which are hard to see).  We use the brand name playtex liners and consistently measure out 7oz in a measuring cup, then pour into the bottle.  For some bottles, it falls between 6-7 oz, sometimes it's over the 8oz line.  They're vastly different, so we're not comfortable using anything but our measuring cup now.

I'm sorry, but this made me lol.

I didn't follow exactly what you do either, and as a brand-new-to-formula user, I don't think my advice matters, but I always do water first, as printed on the directions.

    THIS.

The Target brand ones ALWAYS say there is more fluid than there is. I measure outside and then mix for this reason. 5oz measured in a measuring cup is 6.5oz in the Up & Up liners.

This is the first time I've bought them instead of the Playtex. Never.Again.

  • Ugh.

Yes, the water goes in first per the instructions.  I'm thinking that maybe you need 1st grade reading class?? ;)

  • Water first, otherwise you won't get an accurate measurement.
  • My husband and I were recently at the local Children's Hospital and we overheeard a dr. on the phone saying they figured out what was causing the seizures- the parents were watering down the formula.  Don't mess with directions!!
  • What kind of formula are you using that doesn't have directions on the label?

Just like everyone else said - water first, formula second.  Of course it's going to make it seem fuller, you're adding mass.
