If you have a live Xmas tree

When/where did you get it?

How is it doing?

This year we got a tree at Home Depot because we're trying to save $.  We like supporting local business, but I cannot pay $70+ for a tree this year (compared to $40 at Home Depot.. plus they greeted us with hot coffee, cocoa, and donuts.. a nice bonus!).

But we got our tree 2 weekends ago and it is totally crispy already.  Did I get a crappy tree?  I've made sure it was watered.  I didn't buy that mix you can put in the water either.

Re: If you have a live Xmas tree

  • We cut it down at my parent's house on Black Friday. It's doing really well.

Did you re cut the bottom? If the sap had time to dry it won't/can't suck up any water.

  • We cut our own at a Tree Farm Dec 4th. It's doing awesome! I water it with water and ice cubes every 3 days. They had a special- any blue or white spruce for $25 this year and ours is over 9 ft tall.

  • We buy ours from a nursey. It's definitely crispier than when we got it, but it still looks fine.
  • We got ours from Home Depot too.  We've gotten ours there the last few years and have had great luck with them.  They're always shaped really nice.  I think ours is holding up well.  We don't add anything to the water either.  I just touched the needles to see if ours felt "crisp."  I suppose it does more than it did when we first got it but it still looks great.

  • DH buys ours every year at a place in the City near where he works.  They basically set up a tree/farmers market (Clinton/Bailey neighborhood).  It was $60 I think. It is holding up really well and is really pretty.  We have never been disappointed there.
  • we get ours at a local place...the price did go up to $45...and this tree is huge.

The directions it came with was to make a new cut at the bottom (which maybe hard if already set up) and it said to add a drop or two of bleach in the water...especially if you have well water, which i do.

i do know they sell some type of water/tree stuff since i have a bottle somewhere in the house

  • We got our tree at HD one year and it was my fave tree ever, I don't think it died early.. But that is the risk you take with a pre-cut tree cuz who knows how long its been cut for.

We cut ours at this place down the road this year. We got it the first weekend in Dec. Its doing OK. And it was only $45.. but its kinda small.

  • We got ours from a Tree Farm 2 weekends ago. It was pre cut but I think they cut it that morning. Then gave it another cut when they bundled it up. It's doing really good. We paid $50 for it. We got one from Lowes one year and it was the worse tree we have had. After about a week it just stopped taking water. I hated it. After that we won't go back to any of the chains again.

  • We get ours at Bobs Tree Farm every year. https://www.bobstrees.com/

Any tree this year was $45. The past three years we paid $40. For any size. Last year our tree was seriously like 12 feet tall. This year I think it's about 9 or 10. It has held up great! It is still sucking up a good amount of water every day.

ETA: We got it on Black Friday!

  • We get ours at Home Depot every year, and it always does great. We got it the first weekend in December, and it still looks perfect. I put an aspirin in the water... which I heard helps w/ the needles not falling off.
  • We got ours Thanksgiving weekend and its doing well-drops a lot of needles if you touch it, but it doesn't feel "crisp" when you touch it. It still takes in a decent amount of water. We got it at a tree farm, but it was pre-cut...was $40 and its 9.5ft  tall. Home Depot for the same type/size was $65 so we got a great deal!
  • We cut our own the weekend before last.  It is about 8.5ft and cost $25 wrapped.  It is actually the top 8ft of a 12 ft tree but it was too close to another tree so the bottom 4 ft or so was half dead.  We just add regular water daily and it is doing really well still.  We love/hate the entire experience of cutting out own tree, but kids just love it and I think it creates life long memories of going into the woods to pick the perfect tree each year!
