DH and I love Will (Dh's middle name is William), but my fear is that he will end up being called "Willie" which makes me think of a hillbilly/dirty old man...

I know a bunch of Williams and none are called Willie. There are a few Liam's, a Bill and a William. I wouldn't be worried, I think you can have some say over what the nn is (as will he!). Love William, great name.

You're overthinking.  If it comes up, tell people that's not his nickname.  End of story.

I doubt most will do that, but if anyone does, just correct them. My sister had a name that could be shortened and few ever did. I only remember once it happened and my mom corrected that person immediately. It happened more directly to my sis when she was older, and she just corrected people and they accepted.

I think that it is likely that at some point someone will call him Willie.  But it is unlikely to stick unless you love it (when he is little) or he loves it (when he is older, and in that case you have no control over his name anyways).

Will/William is such a classic name, and I just don't think it is at all likely that he will become Willie.

But honestly, Willie Nelson is awesome.

I wouldn't worry at all.  People don't make that stretch to Willie/Billy much any more.
