Pregnant after a Loss

I just splashed boiling water on my belly :(

I was pouring pasta into a colander in the sink and splashed a lot of boiling water right onto my belly.  I pulled my sweater and tank top off right away, but I still have a big, painful red splotch about 6 inches long right under my belly button.  I am sitting here in hysterics because not only does it hurt, but I'm worried that I could have hurt the baby.  I go to the doctor on Thursday, but is this something I should call about?

So much for dinner.

  • If you're like me, if you don't call, you will be a nervous wreck.  I would just call and explain and then let them tell you "there's tons of padding there, it's just a 1st degree burn, no harm done".  Then you can relax and order out.

  • Ouch!  That must hurt so much!  If it were me, I wouldn't worry about the baby though.  A splash is no where near the same as something like baking in a sauna or soaking in a hot tub.  A splash won't raise your body temp and your skin should be plenty protection for the LO.

  • I called and talked to the NP at my OB's office.  She said I need to work on cooling it down for now.  Tomorrow they will get me a script for Silvadene.  If the pain gets worse, I need to go to the ER.  Hoping it doesn't come down to that...

This- the main concern with hot water is raising your body temperature which in turn raises your blood pressure. Just a splash, as much as it hurts you, will not hurt the baby. Your baby is so protected in there! I agree with pp though that I sometimes just like to hear confirmation from my OB, so I wouldn't hesitate calling to get that reassurance!

  • Baby is snug in there, I would be more worried about my skin!
  • I would take some Tylenol for pain and put some neosporin on it.
  • Oww!  I'm glad you called, just to be safe.  Hope DH is helping you out and taking good care of you!

  • Sounds painful! I agree with everyone else, it is painful to you but baby is pretty safe in there, but it is always reassuring to call when you get concerned. Glad you called them.
