Preemies

How is your week going so far?

Re: ::lemen::

  • Thanks for asking!

E's breathing is better, we all went to the pedi today b/c he's fussy - he has a double ear infection now.  At least he isn't wheezing.  Andrew is a mystery - he has a low grade fever still and fussy but that is all, I suspect the augmentin isn't working, I don't know - I'll call back in a few days if he is the same.

if he has  a fever tomorrow they will cancel his surgery.

We got andrew's developmental school report too.  He got major delays in social skills, gross motor, and fine motor.  normal in speech, congnitive, etc.  He got "very advanced" (LOL Woot!) in "school readiness" - he rocks at ABCs and colors and all that type of thing.  They also agreed with mild ASD (in line with suspected PDD-NOS diagnosis.)  They  noted 6 areas of sensory concerns.

They are recommending PT and ST (although he speaks well, his speech/social patterns are very atypical.)

It made me happy to read that they believed 90% of his speech is intelligible.  We have worked like crazy on that.  I wish the rest was more positive, but, it's not far off from what I expected, unfortunately.

  • I'm glad E's breathing is getting better. But sorry about the ear infections! You've had tons of fussy baby time lately. And sick toddler on top of that...no fun. Keep us posted on Andrew's surgery.

That's amazing news about Andrew's school readiness and speech! I remember you posting about how far he has come with speech in the last few months.  Sorry about the delays. Even when you are expecting it, its not easy to hear.

I was talking with a friend who teaches kindergarten and she said she often sees preemies with social delays-they tend to be the kids who hang back and watch rather than jumping into the group. She thinks this is because we have to be so careful with them for the first couple years so they stay healthy. Such a catch-22, healthy baby but possibly contributing to delays socially since they don't go to mom's groups, day care, etc. to avoid germs. I thought that was really interesting.

  • There definitely could be something to it!

Last year we did lots of play dates and a moms/kids group, but it wasn't enough.  I guess that's why they told us to throw Andrew in school.  He's been in school for about 8 months now - but the social/sensory issues are getting worse.  I guess that's where the ASD diagnosis comes in, most likely a result of his grade 4 bleed. :( But, it's really mild (some days doesn't seem so mild to me, but of course I think about it  more!) so we're told he's going to be fine....maybe just the quirky kid.

:):)  In the mean time we're just doing everything we possibly can.

Funny story - one of his obsessions is feet.  It's kind of funny.  I feel bad laughing at home but I can't help it.

We were at a friend's house for a football game party.  A couple was there we hadn't met before and they didn't know Andrew or that he has mild ASD.

We are watching the game and she looks down and says "What are you doing?!" (Andrew is kneeling on the floor, with his face right by her feet - smelling them LMAO)

It's funny because that's so normal in our house.  But what do you say to that to someone you've never met.  It's kind of embarrassing.  Andrew will great people by smelling their feet.  The first thing he says when he sees Baby E in the morning is "I want to see Baby E's piggie toes!".  aahhh.

  • I love the feet story! He seems like such a cool kid--and quirky kids are usually the ones who grow into the best adults anyway.

You guys are doing everything you can and beyond for him. He is getting all the support he needs and it sounds like his school is a perfect fit. Does he do better in smaller settings? I imagine large group settings may be more overwhelming for a ASD kid.

I'm always interested to hear about his sensory issues because we worry about that with C too. It seems to come and go for her. Her OT was worried she wouldn't eat well because of it but she loves her solids and loves to feed herself. But she acts like you are torturing her if you ask her to put weight on her hands. So I have no idea how she will figure out crawling. Some days she does really well and other days....not so much.

  • For him it's not so much a big/small setting as who's there.  He's very uncomfortable around peers, especially louder/rowdier/touchy-feeling ones - but he'd really LOVE being in a room of young ladies. lmao.
  • I love the image of Andrew surrounded by little ladies. Pretty cute!

Did they decide to postpone his surgery? How is E feeling?
