How many daily calories should a one year old eat? I can't find the answer on the interwebz, so thought I would ask my expert moms. I just want to see how close Alexander is to this.
Kellog's post has me really thinking about his weight and height. He is actually smaller than G, so it is something I am certainly going to bring up to the pedi.
In fact, I am starting to question whether to send my Christmas card out, because it's a pic of him in his diaper and he looks very small. I do not want people to talk about him or about us. Maybe that sounds stupid. I don't know, I'm just scared. Blurg.

Re: How many calories?+a my-baby-is-small lament
I have no good answer here. All I have is that I think G & A are both absoluetly adorable & perfect looking. If people judge you from your Christmas card, they are totaly jerks. Like 100% jerkwad.
I'm so sorry you guys have to deal with this extra worry. It really makes me weepy-sad. And it's probably not my hormones.
Alexander is precious and adorable looking! Don't even worry about that!
My understanding is their diet needs to be around 1000 cal/day. I can't remember where I read that, though, so I may be off.
Also, I'm so sorry if my concerns are making yours worse. I hope I have something positive to pass on soon.
No no no, don't worry about that! I think it's good that we hear what other pedi's do, because it can either prepare us for what may happen or at least arm us with information and questions to ask. I mean, I hope you have something positive too, but just for your sake!
Hmm...1000 a day. We are probably not close to that.
She speaks the truth!
I could swear I saw somewhere recently how many calories they should be getting - if I find it I'll let you know. In the meantime, I think I have some Pediasure coupons around here somewhere. If I find them, do you want them?

I don't mind saying it here. He is 18 pounds, 2 ounces, and 28 inches tall.
I'm not sure, but you can go to a pediatric nutritionist. We went to one when LO was 10 months old. She figured out how many calories she should be consuming. Because LO has asthma, she is supposed to consume more calories. Some tips she gave us:
powdered milk can be added to pretty much anything, won't change the flavor or consistency much and adds a bunch of calories
put butter on everything
cream cheese is good to put on crackers
Use cream of whatever soups to boost calories
We currently add Carnation instant breakfast to one of her bottles a day.
I'm sorry you're so worried!
I just googled "toddler caloric intake" & got several hits if you want to try that. The sites I read said b/w 1000-1400 calories per day.
Here's one site I looked at
https://www.livestrong.com/article/88586-toddlers-required-caloric-intake/
My LO is smaller than yours- maybe about 16 pounds, 27-28 inches, and eats probably about 700 calories a day at a guess. She nurses and takes bottles and has three little meals plus snacks.
1000 cals sounds like so much. I only eat something like 1600 cals a day and I weigh 100 pounds more than my LO!
I figure if she's eating until she's satisfied, staying on her growth curve, and getting nutritional food, then we're good. It just doesn't sound healthy to try to "trick" her into eating more calories like some books/people say to. That's just MHO, though. My pedi isn't concerned. I was 16 pounds when I was 1 year and I'm totally healthy. Short, but taller than my mom so genetically normal. Some people are little! I'd rather be short and healthy than short and stuffed with unhealthy food! My mom never felt the need to supplement my diet when I was a baby.
This website:
https://www.wholesometoddlerfood.com/Toddlers.htm
says that they need 40 calories per inch tall. That a 32 inch toddler needs about 1300 a day.
Kinda strange they did it based on height vs. weight.
I honestly don't count calories, but DS has always been in the 50th percentile range for weight. Good luck!!!
True, but the chart is different for girls...if he was on the girl chart, he would be in the 12th percentile, I believe.
I have no idea... In fact, I get nervous that my baby is TOO big. People always make comments about "wow, mommy must be feeding you well" and "he's gotten SO BIG since we've last seen him." I'm always afraid that I'm paving the way to obesity for my kid.
It's funny how different concerns can be for different babies/mommies.
FWIW, I've never looked at a picture of Alexander and thought about his size. Not even once. And, even when I intentionally look to see if he's looking smaller, I still don't think he looks smaller or bigger than any other baby his age. I can't wait to get and display on my fridge the Christmas card I *know* you'll be sending me!
Aw, thanks for the support. Of course, we moms always will find something to worry about. So I guess size is just my thing that I was dealt when they were giving out the anxiety cards. And yes, you should expect a lovely Christmas card plus a little something else
I can't comment on height/weight, because like Nicole, I sometimes wonder if DS is too big. I have no idea how many calories he is consuming a day and I don't know how much I should be feeding him. I usually follow his cues...when he starts playing with the food, I figure he's had enough. Sometimes, though, I think he's had enough so I stop giving him food! But who knows?! I plan on bringing up his weight at our 1 year appt.
Of course you should send out the cards with your adorable guy. He looks just right to me!
I think Alexander looks great. If you're worried about people talking over the Christmas card just take a new photo with some clothes on!
Maybe it's just that I don't see Jack around other babies very often, but he is 20 lbs and 29", and I really don't see him as a small baby even though his percentiles are small. At his 12 month appointment we got a list of how much food and the variety a 12 month old should be eating. This is what it says:
Sample menu for a one year old (to be divided between three meals and two snacks daily):
Milk (whole) = 18-24oz Per day
Cheese = 2-3oz
Grains = 2 breads (bread, muffins, cereal); 1/2 cup pasta, rice or potato
Vegetables = 1 cup (1/2 cup green and 1/2 cup yellow or orange)
Fruits = 1/2 to 1 cup
Meat/poultry/egg = 3oz (not more than 3 eggs per week)
I know that doesn't give you a calorie count, but hopefully that gives you an idea of how much food he should be getting. Jack eats a LOT at each meal, but I don't think he eats all of that yet.
