Cloth Diapering

Help!

For the past month or so we have been having the worst stink issues with our diapers.  It's only the pockets - the prefolds are fine and the covers seem to be fine as well.  But the pockets continue to have ammonia stink in the fleece, buildup in the elastic that causes horrible red welts on LO's legs and waist, and buildup in the microfiber inserts.

We have tried everything we can think of, short of using bleach.  Stripping with Dawn, rinsing over and over until the bubbles are gone, the Rock'n'Green soak, baking soda, vinegar.  We tried making the pail a wet pail for about two days to see if it would help the yuckies rinse out better.  Nope.  We cannot put pockets on this kid, and I'm starting to worry that the covers may end up with junk in the elastic too.  Can anyone offer any tips to help really clean these dipes once and for all?

Oh, and just to put it out there, we have soft water.

Re: Help!

  • Have you tried switching detergents?  Or using less to try and avoid buildup?

Yes, I've tried a homemade detergent (a mixture that was supposedly great for cloth diapers), Tide Free and Clear (on the advice of another CD mom), and Rock'n'Green.  Not surprisingly, I've had the best success with RnG, but I'm still having stink issues.  With all the detergents I've tried using all different amounts, from barely any to what is presumably too much. Even the Rng - I've tried using 1, 2, and 3 tbsp of the RnG, and still no luck.  I'm stumped.
