Cereal

So DD has been suffering from bad reflux since day one. Like I've posted before she used to STTN but in RNP. She is now too big for it and we switched her to crib a few weeks ago. She did ok for a little while but for almost 2 weeks she's been getting up every two hours to eat(formula). In between the she is very restless. Last night I put a wedge under her mattress and it seemed to help a little with the reflux meaning she didn't seem as restless. I was thinking about giving her a few teaspoons of oatmeal cereal tonight to see if that helps. I'm wondering if she's still too young though? I am by no means giving it to her so she sleeps longer just more peaceful. Any thoughts?

Re: Cereal

  • My 1st daughter had reflux and we tried cereal to help (in addition to meds) and all it did was make her spit up chunks along with what she normally spit up

  • My LO just went to the GI doc yesterday and he instructed us to give him 1 TBSP for each oz of milk when he gets a bottle (BFing with supplementation because of supply issues)  I had to go and by Y cut nipples so that it would flow for him.  We use Dr. Brown's Bottles.

I just started this today and my DH is home with him now, I will keep you posted on how it works but my LO is 16 weeks on Monday so they aren't too young from what he said.

  • we put rice cereal in her bottle for reflux and she hasn't spit up since
  • We have been doing rice cereal in DD's bottles for reflux since she was about a month old per her pedi's instructions, which was okayed by the GI doc we saw. And FWIW, I never noticed any change in her sleeping patterns (i.e. how people say babies sleep better if they have cereal in their bottles) but I do think it helps with the spitting up. As PP said, you do need faster flow nipples so it will come out.

And I'm kind of curious as to why you think she is too big for the RnP? I'm honestly not being a smarta$$, but DD still sleeps in hers (looks like we are birth date buddies...sorry if we've discussed this before!) and I think the weight limit from Fisher Price says 25 lbs?

Weight isn't the issue it's her length. I just feel like her legs are too crunched up. Also the way she moves side to side in it she seems uncomfortable. I was planning on just feeding her the cereal by spoon, does it have to go in the bottle? Thanks for your help! P.s. You didn't sound like a smarta$$ it's a valid question:)

Thank you! We use Dr. Browns as well so do they have the Y nipples or just any brand works?

Ok. I know that DD will probably be happier stretching out in a crib so we're going to work on that soon. I just wondered bc your LO looks like a peanut Big Smile

I have heard of some people spoon feeding cereal to help with reflux, but since we started it in her bottles I don't have any experience with that. The theory as far as the bottles goes is that it thickens up the formula and makes it a little harder to come back up (think if you spill a glass of water vs. some pancake batter). So I'm not sure how that would apply for the spoon feeding but maybe someone else can weigh in on that.
