NBR: To stack, or not to stack. That's the question.

My new washer and dryer are being delivered in about an hour. We got new LG front-loaders. I loved my old front loader (had a front load washer and a standard dryer) because it was so easy to just open both doors and transfer wash from one to the other. My DH wants the new ones stacked for space, so we can build storage on the side. But that means actually having to move the laundry fromt bottom to top now. Pregnant, that seems like a chore. And I used to be able to do wash with DS2 on my hip as an infant no problem. I'm thinking the top/bottom will make it harder. WWYD?

  • Unless you are going to elevate them on something, you'll have to bend over or squat down anyway. Ours are stacked, and it's not bad. We have the dryer on top, and I can usually pull everything out of the washer in one or two blobs and then sort of spread them in the dryer.

Hmm this is true. At the store they had them on pedestals, so maybe that's what i'm thinking it would be. I'll probably love it once it's stacked. Goodness knows we can use the extra storage for sure.

  • Unless you REALLY need the storage space I would not stack. I'm with you, I think it would be more hassle than it is worth.

  • I live in a smaller space so I only have a smaller stackable. It's no problem for me. I prefer it. I load the top of the washer but the dryer is on front on top of the washer. It's easy.

  • I think this question depends on a couple of things:

If you plan on having your washer /dryer in the basement you're free to stack away; however, I have heard that it is not advisable to stack a washer/dryer on the second or main floor of the home.  Similarly, I've heard it's not advisable to use pedestals for washers / dryers on the main and second floor because it causes too much vibration.

The other issue would be this:  Where do you do your folding and where do you store your detergents etc?  If folding space is limited you may wish to put a counter across both the washer and dryer to give yourself some extra room.  You can also put shelves or cupboards above the set if you don't stack for laundry item storage.

Conversely, if your interest is in saving floor space, stacking is the clear answer.
