3rd Trimester

Embarrassed by weight gain

Just kind of venting here. I figure if anyone can understand, it's you guys. I'm at 40 weeks and I've gained 40 lbs. I gained 40 with the last one and I lost it all (and more) rather quickly so I know this is only temporary, but I feel so fat. I've held my weight pretty well until this final month. Now my face and arms look fat. I don't want any pictures taken, and I'm even embarrassed to see people at work or church. I feel really uncomfortable especially when I see someone that I haven't seen in a while cause I know they can see the difference. I am usually pretty fit, not skinny, but fit. Thank goodness it's getting cold out so I can wear long sleeves to cover my arms. I know this is silly. We're not fat, we're pregnant, right? LOL

Re: Embarrassed by weight gain

  • This is why I haven't looked at the scale since I was 16 weeks.  There's just no point in stressing over it.  You're 40 weeks so you won't have to worry about it for much longer.  Plus, we're entitled AND 40 lbs is not that bad.

  • You are exactly right....pregnant not fat! I remember the last month last time and just feeling soooo puffy. I'm 31 weeks at 30 lbs now and have a feeling I'll be at 40 by the end too. But like you said, we will lose it fast:) Keep your chin up! I'm sure everyone else thinks you look absolutely beautiful!

  • i gained 60 and have 3 weeks left. same with DD. I am gross but whatever. lost it all and more with her.
  • I feel the same way! I'm 30 weeks and I've gained 32lbs. Everyone, including the doctor, tells me not to worry about it and it really doesn't look like I've gained that much either. I sure do feel like a whale :(

  • Pregnant, not fat! And I think most people get that. I bet they think you look cute.
You already know you can lose it all, so focus on that.

  • Yes you are just pregnant not fat. I have a friend who started out at 115lbs and she gained 110lbs during her pregnancy, so at 40 you have nothing to worry about.

I have gained 34lbs and I am 41 weeks today. I like you lost it with my first 2 pregnancies so I know I can do it again and so will you.

  • I've gained 40 pounds and have 8 weeks to go.  I am so embarrassed about it and won't even tell my DH how much I have gained.  This is my first and I really hope I can lose it and get back to my normal self.  My doctor even yelled at me about it (I do not have high BP or GD) and made me feel even worse about it.  Hang in there :(

  • I've gained 50 pounds and I'm 40 weeks.  I hate it, feel like a fat lard but know that once LO is here then I can do something about it but until then I'm trying not to let it get to me.

  • I agree about the cheeks; when they start to pack on a little extra fat, that's when I start feeling really fat.  Currently, mine aren't chubby, but they've lost some of their thinness.  I'm really dreading them getting chubbier over the next two months.
  • I'm so glad you posted this...every other post I read has about weight gain the women gain like 20lbs!  WHAT?  I've gained 40 so far and 9 weeks to go...I feel sooo gross, yes my belly is huge and that doesn't bother me but my butt, legs and kankles!  GROSS...Plus with this one I started 20lbs higher than when I got pregnant with DD...which mine will only be 15 months apart so I just never got motivated to loose it knowing I would soon be pregnant again...should have then maybe I would feel a little better now.  I know the weight will be gone after DS but still sucks right now.  Would love to have pregnancy photos taken but no way!

OMG I am an awful person. When I read this my first thought was "ha! for being so skinny that friend had it coming".... totally flame worthy thought.

OP: I very much appreciate you posting, I know exactly what you mean by pudgy cheeks and flabbier arms, and just feeling embarrassed. I've never felt embarrassed to have pictures taken, and I think this holiday season will feel super crappy with all the cameras around.

  • I am so sorry you are having those feelings! I have gained 32 pounds (I'm at week 31) and feel beautiful, but it's funny because it's a different kind of pretty. Guys at the gym totally stare at me :) I bet you are looking so beautiful--make sure not to look at those dumb magazines with really unnaturally skinny people- it's not normal! Most women in the world have some lbs on them- because we were made to have babies!!! Those girls who've only gained 20 lbs their whole pregnancy need to eat for God's sake!

My hubby thinks it's pretty hot too the way I'm looking- I'm carrying his baby and he loves my fat rolls lol!  I hope that you DO force yourself to take pics because when you look back you will be glad to have memories of your pregnancy- I promise!

    Best of luck to you!!

  • I know how you feel.  I started sobbing at my last appointment because I had gained 50 pounds.  Fifty!  and with a trimester to go.  Part of my issue is that I used to be morbidly obese and a few years ago I had weightloss surgery and lost 80 pounds so far.   I had wanted to loose another 50 in the next couple of years.  I gained the perfect amount the first half of my pregnancy but then I couldn't keep anything down and they took all the fluid out of my band (which gives me restriction so I don't feel like my stomach is saying feed me all the time).  Since then I have been constantly starving and I dream about food all night.  I talked to a nutritionist and others and they all tell me just to keep focusing on eating well and that we can focus on weight loss again after the baby.  But I feel like a huge failure. I never thought I would weigh this much again, and I worry about increased risk for blood pressure and diabetes now.  I had to make a conscious decision not to think about and stop weighing myself and stop counting my calories.  My husband loves me no matter how much I weigh (I was heavier at our wedding!), and everyone understands that pregnant woman gain weight.  So whenever I feel bad I just put on my mamaspanx and tell myself to get over myself.
  • 37 weeks - 46 lbs gained... I'm used to being fit too, not skinny, but muscular and fit looking - not so much anymore lol. I've got the chipmunk-stuffing-his-cheeks-for-winter look going now too, awesome. I'm a FTM so hoping that it will come off as easily as it came on, I don't mind working hard to get it off. I don't think anyone thinks we're fat, I just make sure that my belly is always out there and obvious so people don't think I just like to eat a lot lol, even though I've always been a good eater haha.

  • Thanks everyone! You guys are all great! I know this is a sensitive subject with most pregnant women, and that it's not necessarily about the number of pounds (we are all obviously at a different place with our weight gain) but how we feel about ourselves. I am embarrassed and bummed about it now, but I know it's only temporary. For those of you FTM, it does come off! Breast feed if you can. I swear that's what helped me lose it the first time. Good luck to everyone! I hope we can all feel beautiful despite the weight gain. :)
  • Even Milla Jovovich gained 70 pounds and I think it's awesome that she is so honest about it (and about how it didn't all just magically disappear five minutes after giving birth).

This just gave me another reason to love her.
