A christening question

My best friend has a little boy who is 6 weeks behind DD. He is being christened on Sunday. My question: I am not Catholic and so no one in my family had their children christened, so I have never been to this kind of ceremony as an adult. Am I supposed to give a gift for such an occasion? If so, what would be appropriate?

Re: A christening question

  • Yes, you shoud bring a gift.  Most people give crosses to hang on the wall, a rosary, a childrens bible, cross necklace, or christening picture frame.  When we baptized our LO we received about 3 of each gift mentioned above, if you think there will be several people there you may want to opt for a more original gift idea.  My aunt gave us a gift card to Barnes and Noble and I loved that idea, we got LO 4 board books that she LOVES!!!

  • we usually give money - $50-100 depending on who it is
  • You can, but don't HAVE to. A nice card would suffice if you're uncomfortable purchasing a gift. Otherwise, I would just hit up the baptism section at a local Christian store, or any book related to church, prayers, bible stories, etc, would be nice.
  • My son was just baptized on Saturday and he received money, books referencing God, engraved bookends and clothes.  It really is a wide range of things people will buy.  I like the idea of a nice card and a board book or two.

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.

  • Thanks for the advice. She is my best friend so I definitely want to bring something more than a card if that's what is typically given. We're planning on getting our LO baptized too, but I wasn't baptized until I was 11 so this is all new to me!

  • I usually give a savings bond. My husband & I are Godparents a couple of times, and for that we have added religious items such as a cross, bible, etc. DS was baptized last year and he recieved gifts of $, savings bonds, bibles, prayer books as well as clothes, books, toys as well as some other personall items.

  • Our family does money, savings bonds and deposits into their 529 accounts.

I amin the middle of booking DD's and since its winter it is a PITA because I can't host at my house and need to find room for 150+ people.  GRRR for DH having a huge family.
